Overview of the inauguration ceremony of the smart livestock farm in Ninh Binh

The smart farm belongs to the project "Establishing smart farms and enhancing pig farming value chain in Ninh Binh, Vietnam" funded by the Korean Government with a non-refundable aid of more than 3 million USD.

The project will be implemented from 2022 to 2025, with the Center for Digital Transformation and Agricultural Statistics (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) as the project owner on the Vietnamese side, and the Tam Diep Nuclear Pig Breed Research and Development Station (Khe Goi village, Quang Son commune, Tam Diep city, Ninh Binh province) under the Thuy Phuong Pig Research Center of the Institute of Animal Husbandry as the implementation location.

Tam Diep Nuclear Pig Breed Research and Development Station is a place to preserve original breeds and foreign pig lines with valuable genes, cared for by a developed human resource and experienced in production and business in a chain. After being carefully cared for, each year about 4.5 - 6 thousand breeding pigs and 18-20 thousand commercial pigs are sold.

At the same time, this is also a branch of the Thuy Phuong Pig Research Center under the Institute of Animal Husbandry, with a modern livestock infrastructure system, there is still a lot of room for development in terms of area scale as well as conducting new scientific research and testing.

Construction started in July 2023, and the project has now been completed and put into operation; the total area is 20 hectares, including 5 main components: Installation of a smart farm demonstration model (of which the sow barn area is 216 m2 , the pig barn area is 467 m2 ); development of a smart farm management software system providing vaccines, breeding pigs, and livestock materials; training, technology transfer at home and abroad) on high-tech livestock farming and data management, smart farm system management; development of policy reports on the development of smart pig farms; development of project documents and marketing of project products.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Toan, Director of the Center for Digital Transformation and Agricultural Statistics (Project Director of Vietnam) spoke at the ceremony.

The completed project will help provide high-quality and safe food for consumers, increase productivity and income for farmers through the application of smart agricultural production models according to the agricultural value chain. At the same time, improve capacity in livestock farming, disease control, goods circulation and system data management for officials and people participating in the project. The project "Establishing smart farms and improving the pig farming value chain in Ninh Binh province, Vietnam" is expected to create a typical clean agricultural production and consumption model with high competitiveness, helping to improve productivity, product quality and increase income for farmers, contributing greatly to the development of the agricultural sector in general and the livestock sector in particular.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Toan, Director of the Center for Digital Transformation and Agricultural Statistics (Project Director of Vietnam) said he was very pleased with the results of a specific and large-scale project of the Ministry, which is the first project in Ninh Binh, a locality with strong development in high-tech agriculture. This is also a key cooperation project between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Development of Korea.

According to Mr. Toan, the Vietnamese Government is currently paying great attention to the role of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in orienting the development of high-tech agriculture and smart agriculture associated with digital transformation in economic sectors. Therefore, putting the smart pig farm into operation not only demonstrates the close cooperation between Vietnam and Korea but also affirms that Vietnam's orientations are correct, receiving support and attention from the international community.

In addition, the project opens up opportunities for cooperatives, farmers, management agencies, and businesses to share and learn many experiences and practical lessons in the process of implementing the Ministry's first model on smart livestock farming. Although it is only a pilot model, it brings values from the root (breed) approach to ensure that goods on the market meet food safety standards and the post-project market access stage, especially in the Red River Delta and Hanoi markets. According to Mr. Toan, valuable lessons and experiences from Korea will be the premise for effectively implementing the Ministry's next projects.

Mr. Lee Sung Ho, Project Director of Korea, spoke.

Mr. Lee Sung Ho, Project Director of the Korean side, assessed that the application of smart farm technology to the model farm in Ninh Binh province is expected to bring three great values: contributing to the production of high-quality, safe pork; reducing production costs and labor costs; increasing livestock productivity, improving pig reproductive performance, reducing the rate of pig culling, and increasing the efficiency of animal feed use.

Vietnam is the fifth largest pig farming country in the world and the number of large-scale pig farming enterprises is increasing. Vietnam's consumption of high-quality pork is also increasing due to economic development. Meanwhile, the cost of pork production in Korea is currently very high. Korean consumers are spending 3 USD to buy 1 kg of pork. Therefore, Korea is having to import pork from many different countries. Therefore, through this project, Mr. Lee Sung Ho hopes that by applying smart farming technology, Vietnamese pig farming enterprises can export high-quality and safe pork to Korea as well as many countries around the world.

Mr. Lee Sung Ho also proposed to continue cooperating with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for many future projects. First of all, exchanging data on smart pig farms between Vietnam and Korea. In addition, technological cooperation between a Korean smart farm enterprise and a Vietnamese pig equipment enterprise. At the same time, establishing a specialized pig farming area for export production in areas with favorable conditions for production and distribution. This is a feasible direction if a safe area for epidemic prevention is selected and the epidemic prevention conditions of the importing country are discussed in advance.

According to Mr. Tong Xuan Chinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry, high-tech animal husbandry is one of the important solutions included in the Animal Husbandry Development Strategy for the period 2021-2030 and vision to 2045. It is also an important goal to ensure through high-tech application solutions including smart, environmentally friendly technology to increase productivity and quality, ensuring that livestock products meet domestic consumption and export needs. According to Mr. Chinh, the project "Establishing smart farms and enhancing the pig farming value chain in Ninh Binh" with the support of the Korean side will be a model from which to replicate many other projects, further enhancing cooperation between Vietnam and Korea in the future.

Representatives of leaders of units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam; leaders of the Korean Project Management Board and leaders of the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine pressed the button to officially inaugurate and put into operation the smart livestock farm.
