Inspire a passion for learning history

In the past, History was often considered a dry subject, focusing on memorizing events and timelines. Now, to stimulate the passion for learning about the past, teachers have applied many creative and intuitive teaching methods, combining theoretical learning with vivid practical experiences, making history more familiar and interesting.

Coming to Ly Tu Trong Secondary School (Cam Duong Ward), we were lucky to attend a History class of class 9A5. Contrary to our initial thoughts, the classroom atmosphere surprised us with its liveliness, excitement, laughter, and lively group activities. Instead of copying, students were allowed to choose their own topics, make videos , give presentations, and watch documentary films through small projects.

I used to consider History a "scary" subject because there were too many timelines and events to memorize, but after learning through documentaries and project assignments, Le Phuong Mai, a student of class 9A5, found that numbers were no longer a fear, but on the contrary, she loved and was passionate about the subject.

Phuong Mai shared: I was impressed by the lesson about the activities of leader Nguyen Ai Quoc and the birth of the Communist Party of Vietnam . Through the documentary films, I understood more clearly about Uncle Ho's arduous journey to find a way to save the country and felt more love and pride in him.

Sharing the same opinion with her classmates, Nguyen Dieu Thao, a student of class 9A5, confided: Before, I found History boring and dry with many timelines and characters to remember. However, thanks to the new teaching methods of the teachers, History has become more attractive and interesting.

History lessons are more interesting through presentations by students of Ly Tu Trong Secondary School.

Behind that change is the constant efforts of teachers. Teacher Pham Thanh Hang, Literature - History teacher, Ly Tu Trong Secondary School is one of the typical teachers for that innovation.

While guiding, she also encouraged students to express their opinions, debate and retell historical stories in their own way. She turned each of her lessons into a “small stage” for students to transform into characters and express their feelings and thoughts about the heroic history of the nation.

Ms. Hang shared: Every class is an opportunity for me to renew my teaching methods. History has the characteristic of recreating what happened in the past, so if I only teach theory, students will be reluctant to learn and will have difficulty absorbing it. Therefore, I apply many new methods, such as: project-based learning, flipped classrooms and applying information technology to lectures.

New teaching methods, combining theory with vivid practical experience activities, help students understand, remember and enjoy learning history.

As for Nguyen Tat Thanh High School for the Gifted (Van Phu Ward), History lessons have become a passion and favorite of students. They are always proactive in learning knowledge from books, creating presentations in front of the class and listening to comments and suggestions from teachers about the lesson content.

Student Nguyen Khanh Linh, class 10, History - Geography major, Nguyen Tat Thanh High School for the Gifted, shared: Group discussion activities in class help us exchange and express personal opinions on historical events; synthesize and unify viewpoints, and together build creative presentations with a variety of content; events are conveyed through realistic and vivid images.

An extracurricular lesson of the History Club of Nguyen Tat Thanh High School for the Gifted through the STEM model.

Teacher Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen, History teacher at Nguyen Tat Thanh High School for the Gifted, said: New teaching methods help students always actively learn lessons, improve presentation skills and teamwork. In addition, I combine some traditional teaching methods, such as: drawing mind maps, collecting videos and documents to help students have an intuitive, easy-to-understand and easy-to-remember view. On the students' side, actively participating in the School's History Club, regularly organizing extracurricular activities to visit relic sites, museums, STEM model creation competitions, museum tour guide competitions... helps them actively learn and absorb knowledge in a multi-dimensional way.

It can be seen that, to help students love and actively learn History without being constrained by the theoretical framework of books, teachers need to promote innovative and creative thinking in teaching. The application of information technology, combining vivid learning forms such as history learning games, extracurricular activities, visiting relics, museums, etc., brings students intuitive, vivid and exciting experiences. Through easy-to-understand, easy-to-remember lessons, linking theory with practice, students not only acquire knowledge naturally but also form a deep love for History. From there, they know how to appreciate, preserve and promote the good traditional values of the nation.
