There is not enough basis to recall the books 'Vietnam's history without borders' and 'Phan Huy Le's posthumous works'

The Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution reached such a conclusion in a written response to Mr. Phan Tan - Deputy Director and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Social Sciences Publishing House, who had sent a document requesting the department to consider recalling these two books.

Previously, in October and December 2024, Mr. Phan Tan sent a document requesting the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution to consider withdrawing two books, Vietnam History Without Borders and Phan Huy Le's Posthumous Recognition of Vietnamese History, for violating Article 10 of the Publishing Law.

The deputy director proposed to recall the books made by his own family.

Both books were published and released in 2024 by the Social Sciences Publishing House, where Mr. Phan Tan is deputy director and deputy editor-in-chief.

In documents sent to the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution, Mr. Tan said that the books Vietnam History Without Borders and Phan Huy Le's Posthumous Works on Perception of Vietnamese History have particularly serious errors in viewpoint.

For example, he believes that the very name of the book Vietnam History Without Borders is very problematic, with the word "without borders".

And the book presents views about King Quang Trung that do not coincide with today's views about this hero.

Or books printed some maps of Vietnam in previous historical periods do not include territories like Vietnam today...

Based on Mr. Phan Tan's request, the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution requested the Social Sciences Publishing House to organize a reading and appraisal of the two above books.

No violation of the Publishing Law

By January 2025, the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution received a document from the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences giving official comments on the content appraisal report of the two books.

Based on the report and appraisal results of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, compared with relevant legal regulations, the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution responded to Mr. Tan in writing with the conclusion that the Department "found that there was not enough basis to consider withdrawing the two books" as requested by Mr. Tan.

The Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution added that in addition to the conclusion of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, the department also organized the reading and checking of the book's content.

The Social Sciences Publishing House co-organized a reading and review of the book's content and asked for opinions from experts and scientists from the Vietnam Historical Science Association, the Past and Present Magazine, Hanoi National University and the Vietnam Environmental Resources and Maps Publishing House.

The opinions on the content appraisal of the two books all confirmed that the books ensure scientific quality and do not contain content that violates the provisions of Article 10 of the Publishing Law.
