Kim Thi Huyen's 15.92m jump not only earned her a Bronze Medal at the 33rd SEA Games, but also shattered the national record of 15.27m that she herself set at the 2023 National Championships.
A number on the electronic scoreboard, but it's the culmination of years of rigorous training, sweat, tears, and even the quiet moments after injury.
"My goal this year, and last year too, was to break my own record. I did it this time, so I'm very happy…," Huyen shared emotionally.
That joy came late, but it was complete. Because there was a time when Huyen thought she could never regain her peak form. The greatest pressure didn't come from her opponents or the cold, heavy weights, but from herself, when she unfortunately suffered an injury.
"I feel a little pressured because I sprained my ankle before the 2025 National Athletics Championships, which has affected my performance in recent competitions," Huyen said, her eyes welling up with tears. Each time she steps into the throwing ring, it's not just a competition against an opponent, but also a silent battle with herself.
Fortunately for Kim Thi Huyen, she was not alone on that journey. Behind Huyen was the support of the local authorities of Vinh Long (formerly Tra Vinh ) and coach Nguyen Hoang Linh Phuong - whom she considers her "second mother".
"I felt some pressure, but Ms. Phuong felt ten times more. But she was always there, encouraging me to overcome it. I also want to thank the Vinh Long unit for always supporting me so that I could focus on training," Huyen shared.
For Huyen, the medal is not only a reward for herself, but also a gift to her teachers and those who have supported her through what seemed like the most challenging times.

The journey is not all rosy.
Born in Vinh Long (formerly Tra Vinh), Kim Thi Huyen began training in 2018, joined the national team in 2021, and currently trains in Ho Chi Minh City. She pursues a unique, strenuous, and demanding sport where physical strength is combined with mental fortitude to reach its highest level: shot put.
"My subject was quite difficult and demanding. But thanks to the encouragement and support from my teachers, teammates, and family, I was able to overcome it," Huyen said.
The 33rd SEA Games was the second SEA Games of Huyen's career. Although she only won a bronze medal, she considered it "a medal as precious as gold" - a reward for years of not giving up after injury, not faltering in the face of pressure, and not surrendering to herself.
At the 33rd SEA Games, Kim Thi Huyen not only broke the national record but also shattered the image of dry statistics, reminding us that behind every medal, regardless of color, there is always a person with a heart that beats with love for their country.
