Ms. Sung Thi Dinh - President of the Women's Union of Sung Phai commune said: More than 80% of the commune is Mong ethnic group. The people here still preserve many beautiful traditional cultural identities such as: brocade weaving, corn wine brewing, culinary dishes... To promote the national cultural identity and promote local resources, we have advised the Commune Party Committee and the City Women's Union to implement projects and models in the area. Among them, there is a brocade embroidery and weaving model. Before implementing, the Commune Women's Union organized for female members to visit and learn about brocade embroidery and weaving models in localities inside and outside the province. From these experience-sharing trips, the Commune Women's Union established a brocade embroidery and weaving group with 16 members. The embroidery and brocade weaving group was established and put into operation not only contributing to vocational training but also preserving the unique culture of the Mong people, especially helping women have a stable income and escape poverty.
Embroidery has brought stable income to the people of Sung Phai commune.
Ms. Tan Thi Dinh in Cu Nha La village is one of the typical examples when participating in learning the craft and getting rich from traditional embroidery and brocade weaving. According to Ms. Dinh, in the past, her family's life only depended on a few fields, so they often fell into a situation of lack of money. During the off-season, she took out accessories and dresses to embroider according to the experience passed down from previous generations. In 2018, after being promoted and encouraged by the commune's women's cadres to participate in the brocade embroidery class, she joined.
Sharing with us, Ms. Dinh said: Through the brocade embroidery class organized by the Commune Women's Union, I applied my knowledge to create products with unique, eye-catching, delicate and "soulful" embroidery patterns and motifs. However, people's needs are increasingly diverse, hand embroidery cannot meet them, while to create an embroidery product and then sew a dress for the Mong people, it takes 2-3 months, even a year to complete. To meet that need, I invested in a set of embroidery machines with 20 embroidery heads.
Brocade embroidery is one of the cultural features and traditional crafts preserved and maintained by Mong ethnic women.
Just place an order according to the desired shape, the embroidery machine can embroider in batches and accurately from the smallest details. The most outstanding advantage of the embroidery machine is embroidering elaborate patterns that are difficult to embroider by hand. Each day, the embroidery team can embroider from 6 to 10 dresses. Thanks to that, Ms. Dinh can import goods from districts such as: Sin Ho, Phong Tho and provinces of Dien Bien , Lao Cai to make. From the embroidery profession, Ms. Dinh's family earns an average annual income of about 400 million VND. Ms. Dinh completely quit farming to focus on the embroidery workshop. In addition, she also hires more workers to work at the workshop with a stable income.
Ms. Lau Thi Do - a member of the Women's Union of Cu Nha La village said: I really like using brocade products of my ethnic group, so I applied to join Ms. Dinh's embroidery workshop to learn embroidery and earn extra income. Working at the brocade embroidery workshop, in addition to being fed and housed, I also receive a subsidy of 15 million VND/year. I will try to learn the trade and work long-term.
From skillful hands, the needles and threads not only create unique products but also weave the dream of changing the lives of women in the highlands of Sung Phai.
