Overcharging, school must refund nap fee for 237 students

On January 12, Sohu newspaper reported that parents of grade 7 students at Van Xuong Secondary School (Guangdong, China) shared on social media that the school illegally charged students for naps, making many people angry.

Accordingly, each student must pay 260 NDT/term (nearly 900,000 VND) for a nap on the table at school. Parents said that Van Xuong Secondary School has 1,200 7th grade students, and just from collecting nap fees, the school has collected 312,000 NDT (more than 1 billion VND).

On the afternoon of January 11, a representative of the Luc Xuyen DistrictEducation Department said that they had received the information and would immediately investigate the incident. On the morning of January 12, a representative of the district Education Department acknowledged the incident and said that the school's fee collection had been rectified.

Regarding the collection of 312,000 NDT (more than 1 billion VND) in nap fees from 1,200 7th grade students, the school principal denied: "Up to now, only 237 students have paid."

Following the direction of the district education department, on the morning of January 12, Van Xuong Secondary School had to stop collecting nap fees and refund all the money collected from 237 students. The agency added that the next step would be to strengthen school management to prevent similar incidents from happening.

Previously, in September 2023, Jieshang Private Primary School in Guangdong Province (China) also caused a stir about charging students extra for naps. According to the school's announcement, students who sleep on desks will pay 200 yuan/term (661,000 VND), those who sleep on carpets in the classroom will pay 360 yuan/term (1.2 million VND), and those who sleep on beds in the lunch room will pay 680 yuan/term (2.8 million VND).
