Finland Travel blogger Lucy Blair calls her seasonal stint in Lapland, the homeland of Santa Claus, a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
Australian travel blogger Lucy Blair shares her five weeks in Lapland, Finland, working as a seasonal guide at a resort. Lucy started her job in mid-November and regularly films her daily life and posts on her personal page.
During the winter months, the northern part of Finland only has 2-4 hours of sunlight. The rest of the time the whole area is in darkness and the temperature drops to -40 degrees Celsius. Her first impression when she set foot in the place known as "Santa Claus's hometown" was that her eyelashes immediately froze when she went outside because of the low temperature.
“It’s exciting,” Lucy says of her life, her job and the resort where she works, which is located in a remote, frozen place. Before taking the job, she was given a crash course in all things Lapland.

As well as learning about the destination to guide tourists, Lucy’s job is to make fake passports for young visitors as souvenirs. She also has to learn a welcome speech and some Christmas songs.
The tourist said that a few months ago she had never even heard of Lapland. But when she received an invitation to come here as a seasonal worker, she immediately agreed. Lucy called it "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go and experience something completely different".

To help people understand the cold in Lapland, Lucy shares her daily dressing routine. In addition to thermal pants and a jacket, Lucy also layers on warm clothes such as fleece leggings before putting on her ski clothes. She wears boots, ear warmers and a hat.
Last December Lapland saw a record number of tourists, with more than 556,000 overnight stays, 80% of whom were international. People flocked to meet Santa Claus, who lives in the Lapland village of Rovaniemi, and to see the Northern Lights.
Lucy and her group of 20 colleagues work together in the same place. In their free time, they travel around Lapland on snowmobiles and do ice sports . Once a week, the group goes to the local pub, which is open late into the night, to make the most of the long Arctic winter nights and spend time relaxing and experiencing life there. The rest of their free time is spent in the resort's sauna.
