Notre Dame Cathedral lights up for Christmas, people flock to check-in

Notre Dame Cathedral is covered with 1,000km of LED lights for Christmas. This year, the number of LED decorations is double that of last year.

Father Ignatius Ho Van Xuan - General Vicar and Head of the Notre Dame Cathedral Restoration Committee - shared with Tuoi Tre Online that this year Notre Dame Cathedral (Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon) is covered with LED lights with twice as many as last year.

Specifically, in 2024 the church will be lit by 500km of LED lights, and in 2025 by 1,000km of LED lights.

“This year is the Jubilee Year of the Universal Church. The theme of the Christmas decorations is blue globes to remind us that we are all members living on this earth.

Therefore, we need to keep the world beautiful, the environment green and clean. The number of LED strings is twice as much because it is wrapped around many globes. We only use a part of last year's LED strings" - said priest Ho Van Xuan.

According to the head of the Notre Dame Cathedral restoration committee, from November 29 to December 7, the LED lights will be on from 6:45 p.m. to 11 p.m. every day.

From December 8, 2025 to January 5, 2026, the lights will be on every day from 6:45 p.m. to 2 a.m. the next morning.

After lighting up, Notre Dame Cathedral lit up a street corner, attracting many locals and tourists to take photos and check-in.

The major restoration project of Notre Dame Cathedral began on July 1, 2017, undertaken by Monument Group (Belgium).

The two bell towers and two zinc towers are the most seriously damaged important construction items. Up to now, Notre Dame Cathedral has undergone 8 years of restoration.

"The restoration committee continues to work hard to complete the restoration of the two bell towers and two zinc towers by March or April 2026," Father Ho Van Xuan added.

The major restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
