This is the first time that 21 paintings by King Ham Nghi have been officially displayed and introduced to art lovers across the country.

Under the pen name Tu Xuan (son of spring), King Ham Nghi has confided in art his nostalgia for his homeland and his desire to transcend time. Over the past 15 years, King Ham Nghi's paintings have appeared on the French art market, mainly from private collections, descendants of friends to whom the king had given his paintings. It was from here that Vietnamese collectors began to discover and bring King Ham Nghi's paintings back to their homeland.

The paintings of King Ham Nghi displayed this time are the result of a journey of more than a year of tireless searching, verifying, and appraising King Ham Nghi's paintings by curator Ace Le, Lan Tinh Foundation in collaboration with Dr. Amandine Dabat (5th generation descendant of King Ham Nghi) and many domestic and foreign units...

Each painting opens a piece of the inner world of King Ham Nghi. For example, the painting “Vue de la résidence d'El Biar” (View of the residence in El Biar) depicts the place where the king used to live in Algiers, a peaceful corner in the midst of exile; the painting “Menthon-Saint-Bernard” (Landscape with Cypresses - 1906) is an image of the French countryside, where the king visited during his excursions, showing the intersection between reality and nostalgia for his homeland. Meanwhile, the painting “Lake Geneva - 1920” has a calm tone, evoking the artist's mood before nature.

Sharing about the significance of the exhibition, Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, said: The return of the artworks created by King Ham Nghi and displayed at Kien Trung Palace is an emotional meeting between art and history. The exhibition will help the public better understand the life and art of King Ham Nghi - a patriotic king. At the same time, this exhibition also marks an important milestone in the journey of heritage conservation and is a vivid demonstration of the cooperation between France and Vietnam in the field of culture.
