First artificial knee replacement surgery in Quang Binh

(QBĐT) - On the afternoon of September 23, news from TTH Quang Binh General Hospital said that the hospital had just successfully performed artificial knee replacement surgery for a patient with severe knee osteoarthritis. This is the first artificial knee replacement surgery performed in Quang Binh.

The surgery was successful. — Surgery for PTC patient was successful.

Accordingly, patient PTC (67 years old, in Quang Trach district) had long-term left knee osteoarthritis, now had pain and limited movement of the left knee for many days, so he went to the hospital for examination.

The patient was examined by a doctor and assigned to perform related paraclinical tests. The knee ultrasound results showed effusion and osteoarthritis of the left knee. At the same time, the X-ray results showed osteoarthritis and narrowing of the left knee joint space.

Through the examination and paraclinical results, the doctor diagnosed the patient with severe left knee osteoarthritis, with underlying diseases of lumbar disc herniation compressing the dominant nerve root (P), and lumbar spine degeneration. The patient was indicated for surgery to replace the entire left knee joint, restoring knee function to the patient.

The surgery was successful, after 2 days, the patient was able to walk and was instructed to undergo rehabilitation exercises to improve postoperative mobility, as well as improve the patient's life.

According to Master, Doctor, Doctor Nguyen Anh Ngoc, Head of the Department of Trauma and Sports Medicine, Quang Binh General Hospital - who directly performed the surgery on the patient - said: "Knee replacement surgery is indicated for cases of severe knee damage due to osteoarthritis, deformed knee joints after trauma or other causes.

With this surgery, the doctor will remove the damaged bone ends and reconstruct them with artificial materials to protect them, preventing the bone ends from coming into direct contact with each other when walking, minimizing pain for the patient and correcting deformities of the joints and limb axis.

The surgeon will make an incision in front of the knee. The two articular cartilage surfaces of the femoral condyle and tibial plateau are removed. The surgeon will replace them with two metal components attached to the femoral condyle and tibial plateau. The meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament will also be removed. The posterior cruciate ligament will be decided whether to keep or not depending on the type of joint. The metal components will be attached to the bone and held in place with a thin layer of medical cement. A piece of polyethylene is inserted between the two femoral and tibial components, allowing the knee joint to move smoothly.

After 2 days, the patient can walk and is instructed to do rehabilitation exercises to improve postoperative mobility.

Knee replacement surgery with an artificial joint is an advanced method for patients with severe, long-term knee osteoarthritis, in whom medical treatment and physical therapy are no longer effective, helping patients to almost completely restore joint function, avoiding the risk of disability.
