Mr. Cung Trong Cuong, Director of Hue City Development Research Institute

Mr. Cung Trong Cuong shared: To bring Hue Bookcase to students in the city, the Institute actively coordinates with the Department of Education and Training (DET) and the Department of Culture and Sports to promote reading culture in schools, through donating books and introducing books.

In 2024, the Institute for Development Studies coordinated with other units to organize a seminar to introduce the Hue Bookcase Project at Binh Dien High School (Huong Tra) and An Luong Dong High School (Phu Loc). The content introduced the Hue Bookcase and the role of young people in promoting the development of the Hue Bookcase, introduced some publications, such as "Hue - the Miraculous Capital", and donated some other books. Thuan Hoa Publishing House and the General Library, two accompanying units, also donated books and introduced the library so that students could access valuable books and read books in an open environment. The goal of the Hue Bookcase is to spread Hue culture and reading culture, one of the important foundations to improve knowledge for young people. They are also important people in promoting the Hue Bookcase and Hue's reading culture in the future.

On the occasion of this year's Book and Reading Culture Day, the Institute coordinated with the Department of Education and Training to organize a discussion on "Hue Bookcase and Reading Culture with Students of the Ancient Capital", introducing reading culture ambassador models that have been successfully organized nationwide, community models such as the Hue Book and Culture Club... so that schools can refer to them in organizing activities to promote reading culture for students.

So have some of the implemented activities achieved the desired results? Are students interested in Hue Bookcase?

We have found that the best, fastest and most effective approach is to approach the education sector, from primary to high school. Students are very interested in learning about the Project to Establish and Develop the Hue Bookcase and publications about Hue. Through these activities, we expect middle and high school students to understand the Hue Bookcase and access this document repository. From there, they can spread the value of the Hue Bookcase as well as the reading culture to their families and communities. This is a good and effective approach. However, due to resources, we have only implemented it in a few places in a promotional manner, and we look forward to the support of the Department of Education and Training and related units to create more dissemination.

In addition to Hue Bookcase, there is a lot of other knowledge from specialized bookcases, reference books... Hue Bookcase is a part of it, including Hue culture, behavioral attitudes, cultural history... In the future, when the number of publications of Hue Bookcase expands, many very new books and books suitable for young people can be included in Hue Bookcase because they have practical value.

When organizing promotional activities, Hue Bookcase as a core part, the Institute brings many other publications along with Hue Bookcase for students to access. Through the ideology of Hue Bookcase to spread reading culture is important.

According to you, what needs to be done to create interest, arouse passion and help children realize the value of Hue Bookcase?

This is a very important thing. In order for young people to be passionate about reading and to promote the development of Hue Bookcase in the future, in addition to the dissemination of the Hue Bookcase group, it is very important that each school immediately promotes the culture of reading and must have a space for reading, organize reading hours, book competitions... Another very important thing is how to spread the culture of reading so that from libraries, schools to public places, everyone loves books and reads.

Speaking of Hue Bookcase, it is only limited to specialized books, but we must think of it more broadly as a fulcrum to promote reading culture, promote knowledge through books. This is the aspiration of the Hue Bookcase Project. To achieve this, there must be a process, with methodical steps. Of course, with the current fast-developing environment, the form of reading must also change, including Hue Bookcase must follow this change.

Do you have any suggestions for spreading reading culture in schools?

We have not yet compiled exact figures, but according to experts or through some forums related to reading culture, the rate of reading in schools is not high. To promote reading culture in schools, educational institutions implement through school channels, for example, building bookcases in schools or reading hours. The Institute for Development Studies is promoting reading culture from families, communities, book clubs, etc., thereby creating a spread to everyone in general and students in particular. This takes time and must be continuous and positive.

To spread the reading culture in the school environment, in my opinion, every school has a library and can mobilize books, but the important thing is to have creative ways to attract students. Currently, many schools do this very well. If every school does it well, the reading movement will spread.

Thank you!
