Yen Lap Lake is the largest reservoir in the province with a capacity of 127.5 million m3; the main dam is 270m long and 37m high. The lake plays a very important role in providing irrigation water for 8,320ha of agricultural land, providing fresh water for 1,500ha of aquaculture, creating a source of domestic and industrial water with a capacity of 33.5 million m3/year.
According to the report of Yen Lap Irrigation Company Limited, the current water level in Yen Lap Lake is at 24.75m (3m higher than the same period in 2024), equivalent to 70 million m3. Since the beginning of the year, due to the dry weather and less rain than the same period in 2024, Yen Lap Irrigation Company Limited has arranged a schedule to open water to serve production and daily life in the localities of Ha Long City, Quang Yen Town and Uong Bi City to ensure reasonableness, minimizing the amount of water needed.
Regarding Yen Lap Lake protection forest, the total forest area assigned to the Yen Lap Lake Protection Forest Management Board is over 10,100 hectares, of which over 7,000 hectares are natural forests, the remaining nearly 3,000 hectares are production forests and bare land. The Yen Lap Lake protection forest area plays a particularly important role in regulating water for Yen Lap Lake, the largest freshwater reserve in the province, to provide domestic water and agricultural production.
The current situation shows that the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi to Yen Lap protective forest is very serious. However, the implementation of replanting the forest areas damaged by the typhoon is still facing many difficulties, mainly due to procedures related to forest liquidation.
Through inspection and field survey, Mr. Nghiem Xuan Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, affirmed: Yen Lap protective forest plays an important role in ensuring the water source for Yen Lap lake, which is the largest freshwater reservoir in the province. Therefore, the Department of Agriculture and Environment needs to direct the Forestry Sub-Department and strengthen coordination with localities to continue to urgently review and carry out procedures for liquidating the damaged Yen Lap lake protective forest area and protective forests originating from the budget. At the same time, advise on measures to soon replant protective forest areas and large timber forests in a sustainable manner and associated with the orientation of landscape improvement, promoting the ecotourism value of Yen Lap lake and related protective forests.
