On the evening of September 16, the opening ceremony of the Can Gio Whale Festival 2024 with the theme "Echoes of the coastal region" took place in Can Thanh town (Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City).

The event is organized by the Organizing Committee of major holidays in Ho Chi Minh City.

Speaking at the report celebrating the achievements of Can Gio fishermen in 2024, Vice Chairman of Can Gio District People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc Xuan said that the Can Gio Whale Festival has become a sea festival - a beautiful cultural feature of the people in the windy and stormy Can Gio area.

The festival is a special cultural event of the people of Ho Chi Minh City; recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013.

This is also the joy and pride of the city's people in general and Can Gio people in particular, and needs to continue to be preserved and promoted.

According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Xuan, the Can Gio Whale Festival in 2024 is expected to attract a large number of locals and tourists to participate.

This is a spiritual encouragement, adding confidence to fishermen, creating a confident mindset for fishermen to enter the new production season with higher efficiency.

Coming to the Festival, Mr. Nghiem Minh Sang, a fisherman living in Can Thanh town, shared: “For every Can Gio resident, no matter where I go, on the full moon of August, I always return to attend the ceremony and worship at Lang Ong. On this occasion, my family and I prepare clean boats, buy incense, flowers and fruits to wait for the right time for the Festival.”

This year, the Can Gio Whale Festival takes place from September 16-18 with many practical activities, content imbued with traditional folklore and culture.

The highlight of the Festival is the light art performance with 250 drones to recreate the typical images of the Whale Festival, the Water General's Tomb and images of Can Gio.

Implementing the policy of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on reducing the scale of festival activities and events to share difficulties with the people in the northern region affected by storm No. 3, the Can Gio Whale Festival in 2024 will only maintain traditional activities such as the flag-raising ceremony, the ceremony to pay respect to the old boatmen, the ceremony to send off and receive the Whale on the sea, and the festival to celebrate the achievements of Can Gio fishermen.

In addition, a number of cultural and artistic activities including Southern folk music; children's drum and trumpet performances; lion-unicorn-dragon performances; folk games; decoration contests, float parades for the Whale Festival - Full Moon Festival; fireworks, and art programs will not take place...

On this occasion, the People's Committee of Can Gio district awarded certificates of merit and rewards to many individuals with good labor and production achievements and individuals and units that have performed activities in restoring, preserving and maintaining Ong Thuy Tuong's Tomb.

In addition, local people and tourists participating in the Festival also contributed to support people in the northern provinces affected by storm No. 3./.
