The measure was introduced to prevent the risk of energy shortages after the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The preliminary agreement will extend the rule, which was due to expire, until the end of 2027, according to a statement from the EU Council, which represents the governments of the 27 member states.
Under more flexible terms recently agreed with the European Parliament, member states are allowed to meet the 90% reserve target at any time between October 1 and December 1, instead of the previous November 1 deadline.
However, the deal still needs to be formally approved by both the Council and the European Parliament.
The above regulation was approved by the EU in June 2022 in the context of a serious decline in gas flows from Russia, with the aim of enhancing energy security and reducing dependence on Moscow.
According to the European Commission, gas reserves currently only meet about 30% of the bloc's total gas consumption in winter./.
