Revealing 70 restaurants in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City recommended by Michelin

Michelin Guide officially opens a new era for Vietnamese cuisine with the first 70 recommended restaurants and eateries in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

On the evening of June 6, 2023, the Michelin Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Launch Ceremony took place in Hanoi, attracting the attention of experts and Vietnamese food lovers.

70 Michelin Selected restaurants (restaurants recommended by Michelin Guide), of which 32 are in Hanoi and 38 are in Ho Chi Minh City. There is also a list of 29 Bib Gourmand restaurants (restaurants with delicious food at affordable prices).

This list not only marks a historic achievement for the Vietnamese culinary industry but also a turning point for the culinary tourism industry of the two largest cities in Vietnam.

After Michelin officially announced its arrival in Vietnam last December, secret appraisers, known for their expertise, sophisticated taste, and extensive knowledge of international cuisine, sped up their journeys across Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in search of “hidden gems.”

Through anonymous visits and rigorous evaluation, the appraisers ensure that only the best and most unique culinary experiences are recognized and worthy of being honored in Michelin's first list in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The selections announced capture the essence of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City cuisine, highlighting the exceptional talents of local chefs and the rich diversity of flavors that make Vietnamese cuisine unique.

In addition to showcasing a diverse range of street food experiences, the list also features Vietnamese fine dining experiences where cuisine is approached in a fresh and creative way, creating memorable culinary journeys for discerning diners from around the world.

Speaking at the Michelin Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Launch Ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Vu Quynh Anh - General Director of Sun Hospitality Group (a resort tourism brand of Sun Group) shared: “From the list announced by Michelin today, the world’s new culinary destination named Vietnam will be spread to global tourists. The foundation for the new development of not only the culinary industry, but also the Vietnamese tourism industry in general, will also be built from today”.

Ms. Quynh Anh also affirmed: “To be able to accompany the Michelin Guide in Vietnam, it is not easy, especially in the difficult context of the global economy after the pandemic. We understand that this historic milestone has just been established and the next journey, for Vietnam to have more Michelin awards in the future, will require a lot of effort.

But with the presence of the Michelin Guide, the efforts of chefs and those working in the culinary industry across Vietnam, we believe that very soon, Vietnam will be a classy culinary destination that every international tourist needs to visit once in their life."

Culinary artist Anh Tuyet shared: “In more than 40 countries where Michelin is present, as far as I know, most of them are state agencies that take care of connecting and cooperating with Michelin Guide. But in Vietnam, for the first time, a private corporation has done this, which is a great contribution to the country.”

The late master chef Joël Robuchon once told Food & Wine magazine: “With one Michelin star, you get about 20% more business. With two stars, about 40% more, and with three stars, about 100% more.”

The presence of the Michelin Guide and its star rating also helps increase the workforce in Michelin-starred restaurants by up to 80%. Statistics and expectations at culinary addresses around the world have proven that the Michelin Guide and the list of starred culinary addresses are a “boost”, not only for the development of the culinary industry but also for the economy and tourism of countries.

And with the first Michelin list in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City announced, Vietnam has every reason to believe in a bright picture of growth and outstanding position not only of the culinary industry, but also of the country's tourism industry in the international arena.
