Eliminate cigarette smoke to protect public health

Tobacco is the leading cause of many dangerous diseases. Eliminating tobacco smoke in medical environments, service businesses, public places, etc. has become urgent to protect public health.

Building smoke-free medical facilities

According to the leaders of Da Nang Hospital, to build a smoke-free hospital environment, the unit has implemented many activities, such as: perfecting the steering committee for tobacco harm prevention and control; developing plans and incorporating tobacco prevention and control into the hospital's internal rules and regulations... At the same time, launching a smoke-free movement in the hospital; assigning staff to propagate and advise on the harmful effects of tobacco; monitoring and reminding patients and relatives not to smoke.

Dr. Pham Van Tu, Director of Da Nang Lung Hospital, said that the hospital regularly organizes propaganda sessions to prevent the harmful effects of tobacco; as well as disseminates the regulation prohibiting smoking in the entire campus, reminding staff, employees, patients and their families to strictly comply with this regulation. In particular, each hospital staff member is an example in saying no to tobacco, contributing to spreading the message of healthy and civilized living to patients and the community.

According to the Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, in addition to placing no-smoking signs in various areas of the campus, many departments and rooms also require patients and their families to pledge not to smoke in the hospital to raise their sense of responsibility... The ultimate goal is to create a green - clean - beautiful and safe medical environment; to protect the health of patients, especially children and pregnant women.

Towards a smoke-free service environment

The Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund ( Ministry of Health ) has just coordinated with the Da Nang Department of Health to launch the "Campaign to strengthen the implementation of smoke-free environments in restaurants, hotels and public places". Ms. Phan Thi Hai, Deputy Director of the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund, said that in Vietnam, each year there are up to 103,000 deaths due to tobacco-related diseases. Therefore, strengthening the implementation of smoke-free environments in restaurants, hotels and public places is of special importance. This is not only a practical action to implement the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention, but also demonstrates a civilized lifestyle, social responsibility and respect for public health.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Health Truong Quang Binh, Da Nang always identifies protecting, caring for and improving people's health as a key task. In particular, preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco is one of the important contents of preventive medicine work, part of the strategy to build a "Healthy City - Livable City".

Accordingly, the health sector has coordinated with departments, branches, localities and organizations to carry out many activities such as propagating behavior change, organizing training, guiding service establishments to implement smoke-free regulations. The Department of Health continues to advise the City People's Committee on solutions to strengthen State management, perfecting the inter-sectoral coordination mechanism in preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco. At the same time, directing health units to step up propaganda, inspection and supervision of the implementation of smoke-free environments in hospitals, medical facilities, schools and communities; coordinating with sectors, businesses and media agencies to replicate the models of "Smoke-free Unit", "Green, clean, friendly hotels and restaurants".
