Horrific tornado in the US, many people died and injured

The US state of Texas experiences an average of 132 tornadoes each year.

AFP news agency reported on June 16 that a "horrific" tornado swept through northern Texas (USA) and caused widespread destruction, while there was information that at least 3 people were killed and about 100 people were injured.

Millions of Americans across several southern and midwestern states are under severe weather warnings as high temperatures sweep through the region, bringing tornadoes, thunderstorms and golf-ball-sized hail.

Authorities have warned of tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash flooding in parts of Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Florida.

A tornado ripped through Perryton, a town of about 8,000 people in North Texas, on the evening of June 15. Images from a storm chaser’s drone showed several damaged buildings, uprooted trees and overturned vehicles.

Perryton Fire Chief Paul Dutcher said three people were killed and about 100 were treated at local hospitals for injuries of varying severity. Some were taken to trauma centers.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the state quickly mobilized emergency response resources to provide all necessary support to protect residents and assist those affected, including search and rescue teams, medical personnel, and workers to restore power and water services.

Texas Congressman Four Price said multiple structures were damaged and "this is a serious situation."

The National Weather Service (NWS) said there was a risk of tornadoes in parts of northern and central Texas, including Dallas, a city of 1.2 million people.

“Large hail and damaging winds are the primary threats, but a tornado or two cannot be ruled out,” the NWS said in a release.

According to ABC, there are an average of 132 tornadoes in Texas each year, mostly occurring from April to June, when the cold winter gives way to the heat of summer.
