The story of two brothers who escaped the flash flood disaster in Lang Nu

Việt NamViệt Nam13/09/2024

On the morning of September 13, the news that 8 people who were confirmed missing in the flash flood in Lang Nu village on September 10 had returned made many people feel relieved.

Today is the fourth day after the terrible disaster in Lang Nu. Three days ago, all the news reports carried a heavy atmosphere of mourning, about the discovery of bodies here and there.

And the fact that 8 more people are safe, no longer on the list of missing victims, is perhaps the best news of all. The 8 people who escaped are members of the 2 families of Mr. Hoang Van Tien and Mr. Hoang Van Duan. Mr. Duan is Mr. Tien's younger brother.

The night before the incident, because the grandfather was sick, both families moved to his house for convenience in taking care of him.

Early in the morning of September 10, on their way back home, Mr. Tien and Mr. Duan witnessed a horrifying scene that they will probably never forget.

Mr. Hoang Van Tien and his wife Hoang Thi Dien have two children. Mr. Tien said that on the morning of September 10, after waking up, at around 5:30 a.m., his family went to visit the stream because the day before they saw the water level rising and heard the rumbling sound of soil, rocks and water.

He went first, his wife and children followed behind. When they finished watching and were about to leave, they heard a loud explosion on the hill. Water rushed down and then rose about 200m high, creating a red area of mud.

At that moment, he shouted, "Village, it's collapsed, everyone is dead."

“From the time we heard the explosion until the whole village was leveled was only about 3 minutes. My family ran out and escaped, but just a few minutes later, when we looked back, we saw that the village was gone, everything had collapsed, everything was gone,” Mr. Tien said sadly.

Mr. Tien's younger brother, Mr. Hoang Van Duan (39 years old), also went to his grandfather's house with his wife and two children to sleep, and thanks to that, they also escaped death.

Mr. Duân said that on the morning of the flash flood, he and his brother's family went to see the water. After watching, his family and his brother's family returned to the bridge near Lang Nu village when they heard a loud explosion, accompanied by mud and dirt flying up.

Although he tried to shout loudly to warn everyone in the village, because the moment happened so quickly, Mr. Duân said the whole village was buried in just a few minutes.

The two brothers then rushed with everyone to search and rescue the victims. During that process, his family discovered a child struggling in the water, so they rushed to rescue him and looked for his parents, but only found the body of his father.

The child was injured and had a broken leg so he was taken to the emergency room by local people.

When asked if they informed anyone about the incident at that time, Mr. Tien and Mr. Duân said that when they left, they did not have time to bring anything with them, all their belongings and phones were swept away by the flood.

During the past few days, Mr. Tien himself actively participated in the search for missing victims of the flash flood, but he did not expect that he and his family members were also on the list of missing people.

The terrifying flash flood occurred at around 6am on September 10, when floodwaters and rocks from Con Voi Mountain suddenly crashed down, flattening 37 houses of Lang Nu village residents. According to statistics, these 37 households consisted of 158 people, including 18 children under 6 years old, 14 people under 14 years old, 3 people over 70 years old, and the rest were 15-69 years old.

The area affected by the flash flood is located 40km from the center of Bao Yen district and 120km from Lao Cai city. At that time, traffic was cut off, telecommunication signals were unavailable, so all communication with the outside world was cut off. Therefore, it was not until early afternoon of the same day that the rescue team was able to reach the scene.

So far, authorities have determined that 48 bodies have been found after the flash flood, 39 people are missing, 17 people are injured and 8 people were lucky to escape.

650 officers, soldiers and people are still searching for missing victims.
