"Nigerian authorities said flooding during this year's rainy season, which usually begins in June, has affected about 550,000 people, with the Dosso, Tillaberi and Maradi regions worst affected," Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN secretary-general, told reporters at a press briefing.

Mr. Farhan Haq quoted information from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs as saying that the floods also destroyed nearly 55,000 houses and many agricultural lands were submerged.

The United Nations and partners are supporting government -led relief efforts in Niger, but resources remain very limited, with the response plan for Niger this year totaling $603 million.
