According to Shin Min Daily News , the incident happened around 4 p.m. when the entire ceiling in front of the shop suddenly collapsed onto the tables and chairs below. The scene was a mess with iron frames, electrical wires, and plaster scattered all over the ground. Inside the shop was dark, with employees standing outside working with the authorities.

Witnesses said the victims were mainly international students. A female student was injured in the nose and cried loudly in panic. A pregnant woman who was passing by slipped and fell to the ground to avoid the falling ceiling. About 10 people present joined forces to lift the heavy ceiling to rescue those trapped.
“We ran out and saw the ceiling had collapsed. So we all rushed in to hold the ceiling up so that those trapped underneath could crawl out,” Channel News Asia quoted a witness sitting in a nearby shop as saying.
The Straits Times quoted a witness as saying: "The ceiling was quite heavy, but we had enough people to lift up a corner so that those trapped could crawl out. Some people even volunteered to crawl underneath to retrieve personal belongings for the victims."
Medical staff later arrived and took two victims and a pregnant woman to the hospital. This morning, the collapsed ceiling area was cleaned up and Swirl Lover was temporarily closed to cooperate with the investigation.

On social media, the store said the decision to stop operations was to ensure safety and "pray for the speedy recovery of those affected."
The Singapore Building and Construction Authority said the building structure was not affected by the incident. The initial cause is believed to be improperly installed suspended ceilings. The area has been cordoned off and the building owner has been asked to appoint a competent engineer to come up with long-term preventive and corrective measures.
Some trapped students also said that before the incident happened, they heard cracking sounds from above and worriedly asked each other "Is it going to collapse?", but they did not expect it to actually come true.
