On August 26, FC Barcelona announced that it had successfully extended the contract with goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen until 2028. Not only did Ter Stegen commit to a long-term future with Barcelona, he also helped the Catalan team reduce its financial burden.

Ter Stegen's old contract still had 2 years until 2025 with a salary of 9 million Euro/year. However, he agreed with Barcelona to cancel this contract and sign a new contract with a salary of only about 6 million Euro/year.
Thus, by extending his contract, Ter Stegen has saved Barcelona 6 million Euros in salary for the remaining 2 years of his old contract. Ter Stegen is the last name left from the 2015 treble-winning squad including Messi, Neymar, Suarez, Iniesta, Busquets, Pique...
Before offering Ter Stegen a contract extension, Barcelona had also tried many ways to improve the club's financial situation, including selling all shares of Barca Studio and canceling services for the La Masia youth academy such as taxis and canteens.
