Protection against cardiovascular disease

Research shows that consuming more than 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil per day reduces the risk of overall cardiovascular disease by 15% and the risk of coronary heart disease by 21%.

Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, especially oleic acid, which has been shown to increase good cholesterol and decrease bad cholesterol. Additionally, the high antioxidant content in olive oil may help prevent atherosclerosis.

Prevent stroke

Olive oil’s blood pressure-lowering and cholesterol-lowering properties may also protect against stroke. One review found that consuming olive oil daily may reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease. Another study found that just over 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil per day had the same effect, according to Verywell Health.

A meta-analysis also concluded that a Mediterranean diet high in olive oil may reduce symptoms of metabolic syndrome, which includes risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity and high blood sugar, all of which increase the risk of health problems such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Reduce the risk of cancer

Research shows that consuming a lot of olive oil in Mediterranean countries can reduce the risk of many types of cancer. This benefit is due to the antioxidant-rich phenolic compounds in olive oil, including hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein, which protect cells from free radicals.

Researchers found evidence that high olive oil consumption was associated with a 31% lower risk of cancer overall. For each type of cancer, high olive oil consumption was associated with a 54% lower risk of urinary tract cancer, a 33% lower risk of breast cancer, a 26% lower risk of upper aerodigestive tract (lung, head and neck) cancer, and a 23% lower risk of gastrointestinal cancer.

Increase longevity and prevent chronic diseases

Results from a 2022 study found that consuming more olive oil may reduce the risk of premature death from all causes and certain diseases. Researchers found that consuming more than 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil per day was associated with a 19% lower risk of death from all causes, a 17% lower risk of death from cancer, a 29% lower risk of death from Alzheimer's disease and neurodegenerative diseases, and an 18% lower risk of death from respiratory diseases.

Another review study also found that just 1.5 teaspoons of olive oil per day reduced the risk of death from dementia by 28%.

Additionally, adding olive oil to coffee can help reduce arthritis, improve gut health, and reduce symptoms of depression.

The olive oil added to coffee should be extra virgin. Research shows that higher concentrations of phenols may provide optimal antioxidant effects.

Why combine coffee and olive oil?

Coffee and olive oil are two very healthy foods. Nutritionist Beata Rydyger (USA) said: Coffee contains caffeine, which can help improve alertness, attention and cognitive performance, as well as improve mood and reduce the risk of depression. In particular, research shows that drinking coffee can help reduce the risk of stroke and dementia. Moreover, a 2021 review study also found that coffee consumption reduces the risk of certain types of cancer, including liver, brain and breast.

Nutritionist Beata Rydyger recommends adding 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil to a 100 ml cup of coffee.
