According to BGR , a Reddit user named Hackermchackface recently discovered that the latest version of Microsoft Edge can send requests to bingapis.com containing the full URL of almost any website the user visits. The member said: "Searching for references to this URL gives very few results and no documentation on this feature. I'm definitely not the first person to discover this."
Follow Creator is said to be causing issues with Microsoft Edge
Reddit users responding to this thread found that bingapis.com is a domain owned by Microsoft. They were unable to determine why Microsoft would implement such a user activity collection feature.
Explaining this, Microsoft's Rafael Rivera said that the issue could stem from a mistake. Specifically, Microsoft Edge currently has a "Follow Creator" feature enabled by default. The purpose of this is to notify Bing when users visit certain sites, such as YouTube or Reddit, but it seems to work incorrectly, instead sending almost every domain the user visits to Bing.
Microsoft began testing the Follow Creator feature last year and has been rolling it out to more users in recent months. The feature gives fans an easy way to follow YouTube creators with the tap of a button. The problem is that, in addition to the Bing API’s main filter list of blocked sites, the feature sends every URL a user visits to Bing.
Microsoft's communications director Caitlin Roulston said it had received the report and was investigating before taking appropriate action to address any issues.
In the meantime, if you want to prevent Bing from collecting every URL you visit, you can disable the Follow Creator feature. To do this, open the Edge browser and go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services. Under Services, turn off Show suggestions to follow creators in Microsoft Edge.
