At the honoring ceremony held on the evening of May 8, at the Leipzig City Hall, Sachsen state, Germany, Mayor Burkhard Jung awarded badges, honorary plaques and certificates of merit from the city to 9 most outstanding community activists in the fields of society, culture, politics ... including Mr. Bui Quang Huy.
Speaking at this special event, Mayor Burkhard Jung highlighted and emphasized the importance of volunteer work for the integration process, peaceful coexistence of communities for the development of the city. According to him, the awarding of honorary badges to 9 outstanding community activists affirms the recognition and appreciation of the city of Leipzig for these individuals and their activities. These are people who always make tireless efforts and strive for the minority communities in Leipzig as well as for the city itself.
Mr. Bui Quang Huy has been the President of the Vietnamese Association in Leipzig since 2004. He has lived in Germany for more than 40 years and has been a “close bridge” between the Vietnamese community and the city of Leipzig for 20 years. Not only does he support and advise community members who are in difficulty or need to handle procedures and paperwork, Mr. Huy also organizes language courses, supportseducation and organizes cultural exchange events...
One of his greatest efforts is to promote cooperation between many localities of Vietnam and Leipzig city, especially the partnership between Leipzig and Ho Chi Minh City. On July 21, 2021, under the witness of Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu, the Leipzig City Council approved the establishment of a partnership with Ho Chi Minh City, officially elevating the friendly relationship between the two cities after more than 5 years of implementing many effective and practical cooperation projects, becoming twin cities.
In addition to helping the community, the Vietnamese Association in Leipzig, headed by Mr. Huy, also regularly supports the activities of associations from within the country working in Leipzig, helps international students study in the city, and coordinates with the city to organize many exchange events and multicultural weeks.
February 23, 2020 became an unforgettable mark when the Spring Festival organized by the Vietnamese Community in Leipzig attracted 181,400 Germans and international friends to attend, and was reported by many German media agencies such as LVZ and MDR. In particular, the city's film crew made a reportage about this event. In addition to the main activities, the art performance program with 26 performances prepared and elaborately staged by Vietnamese cultural and artistic associations and clubs in Germany was enthusiastically cheered by German audiences and international guests.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vietnamese Association in Leipzig called on organizations, associations and people to join hands to support the city. In addition to 10,200 masks sewn by the people and 8,000 masks donated to the city, the Association also called on companies in Vietnam to donate 400,000 anti-epidemic masks to Leipzig. In addition, the Association also supported the Leipzig Charity Association to cook more than 100 meals a day for more than a month to serve lunch to Sankt Georg Hospital during the outbreak.
When the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out, Mr. Huy and the Vietnamese Association in Leipzig called on the community to cook free meals for hundreds of refugees. In addition, the Association also distributed hundreds of bags of rice, instant noodles, rice cookers and water heaters for free...
On the German side, the Association mobilized local companies to donate over 10 tons of goods and 100,000 test kits to help Ho Chi Minh City fight the epidemic during peak days.
From these activities, the Vietnamese Association in Leipzig was assessed by the city government as the strongest association among 161 foreign associations living, studying and working in Leipzig. The Association was awarded the title of “Honorary Citizen 2020” by the Mayor of the city and the state of Saxony with a special award worth 10,000 euros for its anti-epidemic and foreign affairs activities.
