Floods in the Central region: Warning of many cases of boat capsizing and drowning

Heavy rain and floods over the past few days have made life very difficult for people in the Central provinces, especially Da Nang city, Hue city, and Quang Ngai province. Floodwaters have deeply submerged and isolated many residential areas, and the main means of transportation for people are small boats. However, danger always lurks for those traveling on these vehicles, especially when traveling without life jackets in weather conditions of heavy rain, strong winds, or near darkness. Many tragic drowning accidents have occurred.

On the afternoon of October 29, functional forces including many divers were still trying to search for a young man (born in 1990) in Dan Dien commune, Hue city who went missing in the floodwaters. According to local authorities, earlier, on the evening of October 28, two people were returning from releasing ducks on the same boat. When they reached the foot of a spillway, the father-in-law got on the boat first, the son got on the boat later and was unfortunately swept away by the strong floodwaters.

Chairman of Dan Dien Commune People's Committee, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tien, said that immediately after receiving information from the people, the local authorities mobilized forces and means on the spot to urgently search for the victims. However, because the incident occurred in the evening and the floodwaters were still complicated, the search work encountered many difficulties. On October 29, the rescue force of Hue city sent officers, soldiers, divers, and volunteers to support specialized boats to assist and expand the search area.

The flood situation in Hue city is complicated. After the flood water on Huong River and Bo River receded below alert level 3 on the morning of October 29, it suddenly rose back to alert level 3 in the afternoon of the same day. According to the leader of the Defense Command of Area 1 - Huong Tra (Hue City Military Command), the authorities are currently trying to find a young man born in 2008 who drowned due to a boat capsize in Kim Tra ward on October 28.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Thanh, Commander of the Defense Command of Area 1 - Huong Tra (Hue City Military Command) said that most of the drowning incidents due to capsized boats were due to people not wearing life jackets when traveling. Currently, the flood water is rising, and is forecast to be complicated and prolonged. People need to pay close attention to fully equipping themselves with life jackets and carrying enough people on their boats according to regulations to avoid unfortunate incidents.

In Da Nang , there have been many cases of boats and ships capsturing while moving in floodwaters in recent days. On the afternoon of October 28, in Dien Ban ward, a boat carrying 9 people on the way back from a funeral had an accident in the rushing water. Fortunately, 8 people were rescued in time and one person is still missing.

Currently, the flood water level on the Vu Gia - Thu Bon river system, Huong river, Bo river is fluctuating complicatedly, rising quickly again. Large downstream areas of the rivers continue to be deeply flooded, so people need to be extremely vigilant and careful when moving on boats to leave their homes and not go fishing, picking up driftwood on the river... because just a little carelessness will endanger their lives.
