According to Reuters, on June 4 (local time), US President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning visas for foreign students who want to enter the US to study or participate in exchange programs at Harvard.
“I believe it is necessary to restrict the entry of foreign nationals who intend to enter the United States solely to attend classes at Harvard University or to participate in academic exchange programs sponsored by the school,” Mr. Trump declared.
In addition, according to the order, the US State Department must also "consider revoking" the existing academic or exchange visas of any Harvard students who "pose a threat to the United States."
On June 4, Harvard University criticized the executive order issued by Mr. Trump as "retaliatory action" in the context of the escalating war between universities and the US government .
“This is another unlawful retaliatory step by the administration that violates Harvard’s First Amendment rights. Harvard will continue to protect its international students,” a Harvard spokesperson said.
According to Reuters, President Trump's executive order, effective immediately, will stop all visas (F, M and J) for Harvard international students. This order is expected to be in effect for 6 months and can be extended.
Previously, on May 22, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem decided to revoke Harvard's license to recruit international students.
However, the school immediately filed a lawsuit with the federal government over the decision to revoke international enrollment rights.
Federal Judge Allison Dale Burroughs of Massachusetts twice on May 23 and May 29 issued decisions to extend the Trump administration's ban, allowing Harvard to continue recruiting international students while the lawsuit is being processed.
