At that time, the world was in chaos. Tu Cao and his father wandered everywhere. They almost died many times, but thanks to their handsome appearance, they were spared. While preparing to return home, Han Tu Cao accidentally met the official Ti Khong Tran Tay, the nephew of King Tran Ba Tien, who later became King Tran Van De (522-566). At first sight, Tran Tay fell in love with Tu Cao and invited the young man to go with him, to enjoy wealth and honor for the rest of his life. Believing that the young man in front of him could bring him luck, Tu Cao agreed.

Tran Tay thought Man Tu's name was too ordinary, so he changed it to Tu Cao, promising "if I become king in the future, I will make you queen, this country will be ours alone". Han Tu Cao was extremely favored by Tran Tay. They lived together, closer than husband and wife. Tran Tay had a very hot temper, often angry, but as soon as he saw Han Tu Cao, his anger would immediately subside.

Chen Baxian's daughter, Chen Xi's younger sister, had a handsome fiancé named Wang Sengbian. She did not believe that there was anyone more beautiful than her fiancé, so she curiously went to admire Zigao's beauty. After seeing Han Zigao, she was lovesick day and night, to the point of coughing up blood and dying. Chen Xi took out his anger on his sister's fiancé because of this, and had the entire Wang family executed.

While living with Tran Tay, Tu Cao diligently practiced archery and martial arts every day, and was gradually considered a genius. Due to his many achievements and many life-and-death experiences with Tran Tay, Han Tu Cao was appointed as a general, becoming the person Tran Tay trusted the most. The feelings between the two also became closer and closer, together like two peas in a pod. Ascending the throne in 559, Tran Tay fulfilled his promise and appointed Han Tu Cao as empress. However, the courtiers objected, so Tran Van De could not establish a male empress, even though he always considered Han Tu Cao as the only empress in his heart.

Before Emperor Tran Van De passed away in 566, the king did not allow anyone to take care of him except Han Tu Cao. During his last days in bed, Han Tu Cao was the only one who attended to him, never leaving his side. Emperor Tran Van De, also known as Tran Tay, was the second king of the Tran Dynasty during the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589), reigning for 7 years, with the reign name Thien Ha. After Emperor Tran Van De passed away, the king's younger brother Tran Tu attempted to usurp the throne, accusing him of treason and executing Han Tu Cao.

In 2013, Chinese archaeologists discovered two very large male tombs lying side by side in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. The two tombs are 16 meters long and about 7 meters wide, one oval and the other rectangular. What is special is that there is a connecting path between the two tombs and there are two male Pixiu. Many scientists speculate that these are the tombs of Emperor Tran Van De and his "male queen" Han Tu Cao.

Chinese history also has a homosexual relationship between Emperor Ai of Han (25 – 1 BC) and Tong Xian (22 – 1 BC). After his death, Emperor Ai of Han also had his tomb built next to Tong Xian.
