On June 16, Thong Nhat Hospital (HCMC) announced that it had coordinated with other units to organize the collection and transportation of 7 organs from brain-dead donors and successfully transplanted them to many recipients.

Previously, on June 11, the hospital admitted male patient NHN (39 years old, residing in Phu Yen province) to the emergency room due to a very severe traumatic brain injury, brain contusion, cerebral hemorrhage, and deep coma.

The emergency department doctors resuscitated and intubated the patient, and also called for a multi-disciplinary consultation with the anesthesia, resuscitation, and neurosurgery departments. Despite their dedicated treatment, due to the seriousness of his condition, Mr. N. is unlikely to survive.

After being carefully explained, the family made a very noble gesture of agreeing to donate tissues, organs, and body parts when the patient was brain dead.

The hospital has established a professional council consisting of members inside and outside the hospital with related specialties to assess the patient's condition.

On the morning of June 13, after the conclusion of the brain death assessment council, Associate Professor Le Dinh Thanh, Director of Thong Nhat Hospital, chaired a professional consultation with experts from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Hospital 108, Hue Central Hospital, and Children's Hospital 2.

The experts agreed and decided to begin the organ removal surgery at 3:30 p.m. on June 13.

The 7 organs were then quickly transported to hospitals for transplantation to recipients, including 2 kidneys transplanted to 2 patients at Thong Nhat Hospital (HCMC), 1 heart and 1 part of liver, 2 corneas transplanted to 4 patients at Hue Central Hospital, 1 part of liver transplanted to a patient at Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC).

Currently, 5 transplant patients are progressing well, with 2 corneas being prepared for transplant.
