On June 12, Hue Central Hospital received urgent information from the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation about a case of organ donation from a brain-dead person in Ho Chi Minh City.
NVQ patient discharged from hospital
The Board of Directors of Hue Central Hospital convened an emergency meeting at night, mobilizing a team of doctors to quickly go to Ho Chi Minh City to coordinate with Thong Nhat Hospital and 108 Military Central Hospital to remove the heart, liver and cornea.
On the night of June 13, surgical teams at Hue Central Hospital urgently performed tissue and organ transplants to save the life of patient NVQ who was in critical condition.
NVQ patients with end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy, with very low left ventricular function (LVEF only 17–21%), have had multiple cardiac arrests and are at high risk of death.
The transplant was performed under extremely urgent conditions, with a total cold ischemia time of 5 hours and 30 minutes, 66 minutes of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, and the use of three moderate doses of cardiac drugs.
At 0:35 a.m. on June 14, the donated brain-dead heart started beating again in the chest of patient NVQ, starting a new life revived by the sacred act of the donor and the utmost efforts of the doctors.
