Cold-climate coffee trees are suitable for altitudes of 800–1,200 m, a natural advantage of the mountainous areas in the West of Quang Ngai. Realizing this potential, the provincial agricultural sector is expanding the planting area, encouraging people to convert less effective crops to coffee, gradually forming a raw material area for processing.
Since June 2025, 10 households in Dak Van 2 village, Mang Ri commune have been supported with 2,000 seedlings, fertilizers and planting techniques to build a pilot model. Up to now, the trees have grown stably, with a survival rate of 96-98%, creating confidence for people to invest in care. Ms. Y Dep, a household participating in the model, shared: the model is very suitable for the local climate; people are supported with seeds, fertilizers and techniques, so they expect the model to bring economic efficiency in the coming time.
Within the framework of the Project to restore and develop cold-climate coffee associated with processing and consumption until 2025, with a vision to 2030, the Provincial Department of Crop Production, Plant Protection and Quality Management has built 6 pilot models in the communes of Xop, Dak Pek, Mang Den, Ngoc Linh and Mang Ri, with a total area of 17 hectares, 75 households participating. In 2025 alone, the implemented area reached 11 hectares with 30 households, with a total cost of nearly 670 million VND. The selection of THA1, TN1, TN2 and Catimor varieties with high adaptability has improved the quality of the model.
Mr. Bui Duc Trung, Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Quality Management, said that the unit is coordinating to review suitable land areas to encourage people to boldly convert ineffective crops to cold-climate coffee; at the same time, continue to build a linkage model, form concentrated raw material areas and connect businesses to consume products.
Along with increasing training and guidance on the safe use of fertilizers and pesticides, the agricultural sector focuses on controlling the quality of varieties to ensure a foundation for sustainable development. These efforts are expected to enhance the competitiveness of the “ Kon Tum Arabica Coffee” brand, creating a driving force for economic development in the highlands of Quang Ngai.
