After their shift, three doctors and nurses from Ninh Hoa Regional General Hospital visited Mrs. Nguyen Thi Day (95 years old, Group 8, Ninh Hiep Ward) at her home for a health check-up. There, Mrs. Day had her blood pressure checked, blood oxygen levels measured, and blood sugar levels tested. The doctors and nurses also informed her family about her health condition and provided guidance on how to care for the elderly, especially in cases of low blood sugar like Mrs. Day's.

Also receiving a home visit, Mrs. Ngo Thi Em (85 years old, Ninh Hiep ward) emotionally shared: “My family is small, and my children work all day. I am old, have many illnesses, and suffer from leg pain, making it difficult to walk, so I haven't been to the hospital for three or four years. Now that the doctors have come to my house, I am very happy.” After measuring her blood pressure and taking blood samples for testing, the doctors also advised and guided her on how to use the correct medication for each of her illnesses.
Dr. Nguyen Le Thanh Tung, working at the Intensive Care and Toxicology Department and Secretary of the Youth Union at Ninh Hoa Regional General Hospital, said: "The project was assigned to the Youth Union by the hospital's Board of Directors, with the cooperation and support of the entire hospital. After receiving the assignment, 25 doctors and nurses who are members of the Youth Union divided into groups to visit each household with elderly people to conduct health checkups at home. Over two months of implementation, 120 elderly people living alone have been examined. After the examinations, the medical team handed over patient information to the local health station for monitoring and health management. Severe cases and those living alone will be listed for regular follow-up." “When we visited their homes for examinations, we discovered many cases with very difficult circumstances. Many elderly people suffered from multiple illnesses but, due to limited resources, could not access medical facilities. There was even a case of two elderly sisters living together, relying on each other, and who hadn't had health insurance cards for many years… We coordinated with the hospital's Social Work Team and local authorities to find practical ways to support them. The project not only helps the elderly access medical services but also gives young doctors and medical staff like us the opportunity to hone our medical ethics by directly witnessing these difficult situations,” Dr. Tung shared.
High sense of community and humanity.
Dr. Le Quang Leinh, Director of Ninh Hoa Regional General Hospital, stated: In Vietnam in general, and Ninh Hoa town in particular, people with disabilities and elderly people living alone often face many barriers in accessing healthcare services, especially screening for non-communicable chronic diseases and home healthcare. Limited mobility, economic conditions, and lack of health awareness mean they have fewer opportunities to effectively utilize their health insurance cards, leading to increased disease risk and a decline in quality of life.

In response to this situation, with the support of the Center for Healthcare Improvement Research, the hospital developed a project to improve healthcare for the elderly and people with disabilities in the local area. The goal of the project is to improve the health and quality of life for vulnerable groups. The main activity of the project is to implement a home healthcare model, in which patients receive direct examinations from doctors, nursing support, and remote connection with doctors; while also creating personalized care plans and storing electronic health records.
The project will be implemented from March 2025 to September 2027, divided into three phases. Phase 1 (from March to September 2025) will care for 500 people in the town, including 108 elderly people living alone without caregivers and 392 people with severe disabilities who are receiving social assistance. These individuals will receive regular health check-ups, early detection of dangerous diseases, reduced risk of complications, and improved awareness of using health insurance. Phases 2 and 3 (from October 2025 to September 2027, until the project concludes) will expand the scale, supporting an additional 5,500 people with severe disabilities who are receiving social assistance.
The project to improve healthcare for the elderly and people with disabilities in Ninh Hoa town is being implemented for the first time in Vietnam. The project not only helps vulnerable groups access healthcare services and effectively utilize health insurance, but also contributes to screening and early detection of non-communicable diseases (hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, etc.), preventing strokes and other dangerous complications. Through this, it contributes to improving the quality of life for the elderly and people with disabilities in particular, and the community in general.
As of the end of 2024, Ninh Hoa town had nearly 26,640 elderly people, including 108 elderly people living alone without caregivers; nearly 6,930 people with disabilities, including about 4,190 people with severe disabilities and more than 1,700 people with extremely severe disabilities, who are receiving social assistance.
