Severe heat, electricity consumption in the North hits new peak

(Dan Tri) - On July 17, electricity consumption in the northern provinces reached a new peak, reaching 18,242MW due to severe heat.

The Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) said that at 10:30 p.m. on July 17, electricity consumption in 17 provinces and cities in the Northern region (from Ha Tinh and beyond, excluding Hanoi ) reached 18,242 MW. This consumption level exceeded the previous peak of 18,084 MW recorded on June 2, and was significantly higher than the peak in 2024 of 17,300 MW.

The electricity authority said it has been implementing many solutions to safely, stably and continuously operate the power grid system, ensuring electricity supply for more than 11 million customers in the management area.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on July 19, the Northern region continued to experience widespread heat, with some areas experiencing severe heat with the highest temperature commonly ranging from 35-38 degrees Celsius, with some areas recording temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius.

Relative humidity is low, commonly 50-55%, causing the demand for cooling equipment, especially air conditioning, to increase sharply during peak hours, putting great pressure on the power system.

The power company recommends that people, businesses and agencies turn off unnecessary electrical equipment when leaving the room, and limit the simultaneous use of many high-capacity devices during peak hours. "Air conditioner temperature should be set at 26-27 degrees Celsius and combined with the use of fans to ensure both cooling and energy saving," EVNNPC noted.

Households, production and business establishments are encouraged to invest in rooftop solar power systems according to the self-production - self-consumption model, which both helps reduce pressure on the national grid and contributes to promoting clean energy development.

In the past 6 months, the total system output reached 155.79 billion kWh, of which the largest daily output reached 1.04 billion kWh and the largest capacity reached 51,672 MW. The proportion of hydropower mobilization was 36.5 billion kWh, accounting for 23.4%; coal-fired thermal power reached 84.6 billion kWh, accounting for 54.3%; gas turbines reached 10.27 billion kWh, accounting for 6.6%; renewable energy reached 20.98 billion kWh, accounting for 13.5% (of which solar power reached 13.63 billion kWh, wind power reached 6.71 billion kWh); imported electricity reached 3.24 billion kWh, accounting for 2.1%...

Cumulative power transmission output in the first 6 months is estimated at 124.7 billion kWh, of which the maximum transmission capacity through the North-Central interface is 3,959MW and the Central-South interface is 5,625MW.
