According to RT, on May 23, Russian President Putin signed a decree allowing Russia to confiscate US assets in case the US confiscates Russian assets.
The US and its allies have previously frozen about $300 billion in Russian assets due to the conflict in Ukraine. Western countries are looking to use this money to support Kiev on the battlefield.

The document Putin signed sets out a future mechanism that would allow any damage to Russian assets caused by the United States to be compensated by assets owned by the United States or by related individuals and organizations. The Russian government and central bank would pursue this compensation claim through the courts.
Assets that could be affected by the order include assets of US entities and individuals in Russia, US shares in Russian companies or ownership of property. Assets of persons “under the control” of the individuals concerned would also be subject to legal action. A Russian government commission will compile a list of individuals and entities that could be subject to compensation.
After Mr Putin's decree is issued, the Russian government has four months to prepare the legal framework and submit relevant proposals to parliament for consideration.
The Ukrainian government has urged Western countries to seize Russian assets and use them to finance Kiev’s reconstruction and military needs. The United States supports the proposal, but European countries, where most of the money is held, oppose it, fearing it would be illegal and deal a serious blow to the Western financial system and the reputation of the euro.
Moscow has said it will view any form of appropriation of Russian property as theft and will retaliate if the West violates its property rights.
