In his speech at the launching ceremony at the Admiralty Shipyard, Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Alexander Moiseyev said that the Project 23550 ships will significantly enhance the Northern Fleet's operational potential and capabilities and allow Moscow to further strengthen its presence in remote areas of the Far North.
The Nikolay Zubov is the second Project 23550 ship under construction for the Russian Navy. The first ship of the project, the Ivan Papanin, is currently undergoing a number of tests and is expected to be transferred to the Russian Navy in 2025.
Project 23550 icebreakers are about 114 meters long and 20 meters wide. They are designed for a variety of missions, including protecting Arctic water resources, escorting and towing seized ships to port, supporting supply ships, and targeting maritime, coastal, and air threats.
