The Russian tactical aviation forces have begun using the UMPK guided glide bomb, which is capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 95 km. The new bombs hit targets not only in Kharkov, but also in populated areas south of the city. This information was provided to local media by Spartak Borisenko, head of the Kharkov regional prosecutor's office. According to Ukrainian officials, the first use of the upgraded UMPK bomb by Russia was recorded at around 10:30 on May 31, 2025, when four FAB UMPK bombs with a longer range were dropped from a Su-34 fighter-bomber near the village of Tomarovka in the Belgorod region. Similar attacks were carried out in the Sumy region in May, according to the Kharkiv prosecutor's office.
Such FAB bombs, which previously could only fly 60-80 km, now have a range of 95 km, Borisenko said. Analysis of the debris shows that the Russian military is using a reinforced glider frame, wider wings and new control technology, which increases the bomb's range by about 30%. At the same time, Russian bombings are still carried out from an altitude of about 9,000 meters and the speed of the bombs when flying reaches 700-800 km/h; it is not excluded that in the future the flight range of the bombs may be further increased. This creates additional threats to Ukrainian military facilities in Kharkov and neighboring territories, Borisenko concluded. While Russian and Ukrainian diplomats are arguing over a peaceful solution during talks in Istanbul, Turkey, the “deep-penetration, deep-strike” attacks deep into Russian territory, organized by Ukrainian special services, have made Russia “lose face”. However, this will not stop the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) from advancing on the battlefield. According to analysis by Western experts, the speed of RFAF’s advance in May was the highest since November last year. The success in the direction of southern Donetsk was very large. Currently, in this area, the Ukrainian army (AFU) still has a relatively solid Komar stronghold, considered a “fulcrum” in the AFU’s defensive belt in Donetsk. Although the RFAF has been fiercely attacking Komar with firepower, it is extremely difficult to gain control of this stronghold in the face of the AFU's stubborn resistance. If the RFAF takes this stronghold, they will open the gateway to Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The AFU is urgently establishing a new defense line from Zaporozhye to Kharkov.
Currently, the AFU defense position in Komar, which has to endure the fiercest bomb and artillery fire of the RFAF on the Ukrainian battlefield, has used heavy offensive weapons, including the FAB-1500 guided glide bomb, weighing 1.5 tons. Although Ukraine proudly announced that, after about a year and a half of fighting, they finally overcame Russia's UMPK guided glide bombs, by jamming the guidance system, causing the flying bombs to miss their targets. However, Russian engineers have modernized the guidance system and Russian UMPK bombs continue to be the terror of Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefield. Even now FAB bombs with UMPK can hit targets at a distance of nearly 100 km; while previously it was 60-80 km. With this capability of the FAB UMPK bomb, the RFAF will soon not need missiles like the Iskander. Currently, Russia still has many FAB bombs from the Soviet era in its stockpiles. Unlike artillery shells, which the RFAF can use immediately, Russia has to improve and install the UMPK module on the FAB bomb so that the bomb can fly far and accurately.
With a range of up to 100 km, the FAB bombs equipped with UMPK modules are more destructive than tactical ballistic missiles, especially at a much cheaper price. With such a distance from the target, the bombers are guaranteed to be safe from AFU's short- and medium-range air defense systems. AFU currently has only a few Patriot missiles left, but they must be prioritized to protect Kiev. Regarding the Komar stronghold, Russian sources reported that after just one attack by the Russian Aerospace Forces, using FAB-1500 bombs on the positions of the 152nd Independent Special Forces Brigade of the AFU in this village, at least more than twenty Ukrainian soldiers were eliminated from combat. According to Russia's Rybar channel, the 152nd Independent Special Forces Brigade was established in 2023. The brigade has many officers and soldiers with combat experience. Recently, the brigade has been added 2,000 new recruits, as a reserve force for this front area, to maintain the defense line. Yesterday, the Military Summary channel reported that units of the Vostok RFAF Group continued to attack Ukrainian troops, in the plantation area west of Otradnoye and were gradually advancing towards the eastern outskirts of the village of Komar.
The disadvantage is that the village of Komar is located in a valley and the height difference there compared to the eastern area is very large (more than 20 meters), with the appearance of Russian troops to the east of the village, the Ukrainian garrison in Komar will have a very difficult time defending. At the same time, north of the village of Bogatyr (10 km east of Komar), the Vostok RFAF Group has entered Olekseyevka; while fighting continues in Vesyoloye.
