On December 19, at a press conference at the end of 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin challenged the West to a "high-tech battle" to demonstrate its missile power.

TASS news agency reported that, in response to Western doubts about the capabilities of Russia's new Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile system, Mr. Putin said: "Let us, together with the West and the United States, conduct a kind of technological test and have a high-tech competition in the style of the 21st century."
The leader suggested the West pick a target, possibly in Ukraine, to assemble its air and missile defense systems there, while Russia "will launch an Oreshnik missile at the target and see what happens." Moscow is "ready for such a test."
Also at the press conference, Mr. Putin affirmed that Russia's military strength is increasing significantly in the context of escalating security risks and the increasingly obvious risk of conflict with the West.
He particularly praised the Oreshnik missile, calling it a "purely Russian" weapon that is difficult to intercept by modern air defense systems, including those the West is deploying in Poland.
According to the leader, the appearance of Oreshnik demonstrates a remarkable development in Moscow's defense capabilities.
On November 21, Russia launched the Oreshnik missile for the first time into the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, a move that Mr. Putin announced was a response to Ukraine's use of American ATACMS and British Storm Shadow ballistic missiles to attack Russian territory with Western permission.
President Putin once said that just by using multiple Oreshnik missiles with conventional warheads at the same time, their destructive power is equivalent to a nuclear attack, but without polluting the environment. Using this weapon could even eliminate the need for nuclear weapons.
Weapons expert Pavel Podvig, Director of the Russian Nuclear Forces Project, once commented: "The range of Oreshnik can threaten all of Europe." Because it is a hypersonic missile, modern air defense systems cannot intercept it, at least until now.
