Processing and manufacturing industry affirms its leading role in the economy
According to the Department of Industry ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), the processing and manufacturing industry has always been considered one of the key economic sectors, playing the role of a driving force for economic growth, promoting trade and export, especially some key processing and manufacturing industries such as: Textiles, footwear, mechanics, electronics, supporting industries, etc.

Looking back at the data of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in the first 4 months of 2025, the production index of the entire industrial sector increased by 8.4% compared to the same period in 2024, of which the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 10.1%. Notably, some localities had a high production index of the processing and manufacturing industry in the first 4 months of 2025 compared to the same period last year: Phu Tho increased by 47.4%; Bac Kan increased by 27.9%; Bac Giang increased by 27.3%; Nam Dinh increased by 24.7%...
Previously, according to the General Statistics Office, the industrial production index in the first quarter of 2025 is estimated to increase by 7.8% over the same period in 2024, the highest increase in the first quarter in the past 6 years. The production index of some key industries continues to develop and has a high growth rate, making an important contribution to the growth of the entire industry, in which the processing and manufacturing industry in particular has the strongest breakthrough.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade also acknowledged that the group of processed and manufactured industrial products has done well in diversifying markets. In the context of declining exports to major markets; export turnover to African countries, Eastern Europe, Northern Europe, and West Asia increased; the decline in exports to some key markets continued to narrow.
The structure of export goods continues to improve in a positive direction, reducing the content of raw exports, increasing the export of processed and manufactured industrial goods, creating conditions for Vietnamese goods to participate more deeply in the global production and supply chain. Especially some key processing and manufacturing industries such as: textiles, footwear, mechanics, electronics, supporting industries, etc.
Sharing about this content, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Director of the General Statistics Office, stated that the processing and manufacturing industry has always been considered one of the key economic sectors, playing the role of a driving force for economic growth, promoting trade and export, especially some key processing and manufacturing industries such as: Textiles, footwear, mechanics, electronics, supporting industries, etc.
“ In the industrial sector, the processing and manufacturing industry contributes the highest value added to GDP, creating the premise and foundation for industrial development and national modernization, ” the Director of the General Statistics Office emphasized.
Unblocking the export of processed and manufactured industrial products
Some economic experts believe that the manufacturing industry is considered the number one driving force in expanding production and exports of the economy. This is also the industry that is continuously expanding and accounts for the highest proportion among the industries with its contribution to GDP increasing continuously over the years.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, there are still many challenges that the economy in general and industrial production in particular will have to face, such as the internal strength of domestic production sectors is still weak; industrial production has not fully recovered; the world and regional situation continues to evolve rapidly, complicatedly and unpredictably; the domestic market growth is lower than the same period last year, and the domestic price index is under increasing pressure after implementing a number of new policies.
Industrial enterprises, especially export enterprises, continue to face difficulties in expanding and diversifying markets due to high input material costs and compliance costs (especially with new regulations and standards). Industrial enterprises still lack market information and opportunities to approach customers.
Regarding the supporting industry, Ms. Truong Thi Chi Binh, General Secretary of the Vietnam Association of Supporting Industries (VASI), said that in addition to price competition, businesses in the industry are facing challenges from new market requirements, especially the requirement that input materials must be recycled. Meanwhile, recycled plastic and steel in Vietnam are extremely uncompetitive compared to China, because they cannot recover plastic from households and industry to provide input for plastic recycling businesses.
"The Association hopes that Trade Offices will share information and experience in developed markets, developing countries or countries with similar levels to Vietnam that have done well in this regard for export," Ms. Binh suggested.
Ms. Binh said that supporting industry enterprises are capable of producing a variety of products for export, such as: Motorcycle and bicycle components; products related to electrical cabinets, automation systems; plastic; rubber; plastic and rubber toy products; wind fans, wind turbines... Therefore, enterprises really need trade support information and connections to expand the market.
Faced with the above challenges, the leader of the Department of Industry said that the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to take more active measures to support industrial production, especially output for production through measures to stimulate domestic consumption, strengthen trade promotion to expand export orders, and unblock processed and manufactured industrial products. Organize large-scale international trade events, prestigious exhibitions and fairs in key markets and potential markets. Promote products, promote trade, promote exports and imports, flexibly and effectively combine traditional and online forms of trade.
Some economic experts also believe that in the coming time, there will be many challenges that the economy in general and industrial production in particular will have to face. Accordingly, in order for industrial products in general and the manufacturing and processing industry in particular to have access to demanding markets, many synchronous, effective and feasible solutions with determination from the Government to ministries and branches are needed.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in the coming time, the Ministry will strengthen trade promotion activities, expand markets for processed and manufactured industrial products to be exported. In particular, it will focus on effectively implementing the business support policy approved by the Government, removing difficulties and obstacles in production and business activities of enterprises, especially in key export industries such as textiles, footwear and foundation industries such as automobiles, mechanics, steel, etc. Along with that, the Ministry will promote the operation of new industrial production projects to serve export and domestic consumption, increase production development capacity and goods sources for export.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is also implementing programs and activities to connect supply and demand, search for domestic and foreign markets, especially through the system of Vietnamese trade offices abroad to seek opportunities and new orders. |
