The ideal husband of the 'most evil mother-in-law on Vietnamese screen' Lan Huong

Meritorious Artist Do Ky is an actor from the first class of the Vietnam Drama Theater, and served as Deputy Director of the Theater from 2001 to 2008. After leaving the Theater, he held the position of Head of the Art Department, Department of Performing Arts until May 2022.

On television, he is loved by audiences through films such as: The Mysterious Will, The Genealogy of the Earth, Sunny Heart, Cold Ash Villa, Question No. 5, Scent of the Earth, The Judge, Storm and House Rules - the only film with his wife - People's Artist Lan Huong.

Meritorious Artist Do Ky returns to the small screen with the film project "Where Dreams Return".

During his years as a manager, Meritorious Artist Do Ky rarely appeared on television. In the near future, he will participate in the film project Where Dreams Return by director Trinh Le Phong. In the film, he plays Mr. Kinh - a close and capable assistant of Ms. Lan (People's Artist Le Khanh). Mr. Kinh is calm, extremely loyal, and was once abandoned by his wife.

- After a period of silence on the small screen, what was the reason you accepted this invitation?

After taking on the management job, I didn’t have much time. Filming TV series, the filming time is quite long. It’s hard for the crew and me to arrange and take the initiative with time. Each film, the crew has up to dozens, even hundreds of people, so I don’t want to bother everyone. Therefore, I rarely accept to participate, some films I accept because they only take 1-2 days to film. Now, I’m retired so I have more time, I can proactively arrange to take on long-term roles.

After retirement, Meritorious Artist Do Ky has more time.

- Isn't it because your wife is busy with movies that you can't stand being 'outdone' and have to work harder on acting?

My wife and I each have different jobs, we are responsible for our own characters and works, so it doesn't affect us much. When I accepted to act in a feature film, my wife supported me wholeheartedly because she understood that this is our profession. If we can do the job we love and have expertise in, why not?

- Acting with younger actors, what do you see as different?

Young people have their own strengths and so do we. They fit the character so they feel comfortable playing it. I don’t want people to call me a veteran artist, just a veteran.

I have never been far away from Vietnamese cinema and television dramas. In the last few years, people have started recording synchronized sound, and we still participate in the film-making process in the dubbing room. I have been able to follow the development of young actors from the time they first enter the profession to adulthood. Therefore, I do not feel surprised, and even learn a lot when acting with them.

Meritorious Artist Do Ky and his wife People's Artist Lan Huong always stand side by side, making many people admire them.

- What do you hope for today's young actors?

I hope so. They portray the character according to the perception of today's audience. Maybe I or people in our generation act in a way that only our generation likes?

To respond, we have to change, find ways to win the audience's sympathy. People often say, what the audience needs, what their needs are, we "provide" that. If we still keep the performance style of the 70s-80s, the audience will probably not watch.

However, I advise young actors to be clear when working on television, film and stage. Some of you who are not yet proficient may not achieve your goals. I just hope that the young generation will keep their enthusiasm, calculate how to make their characters attractive, and attract viewers with authenticity.

The two always appear together at many art events.

- To maintain happiness for many years, what is the secret of you and your wife Lan Huong?

We don’t have any special secret, we just choose to be honest with each other, not only husband and wife but also with everyone, friends or relationships around. At first, many people may say we are not tactful, not satisfied, but I think, just live honestly, time will help the other person see us more correctly. Many people say, being honest is disadvantageous, but I am not afraid because it is only a matter in front of me.

- You and your wife have many impressive roles but only acted as a couple in one film. Why is that?

We acted in many films together but with different characters. Nep Nha is the only film where we acted as husband and wife.

In our hearts, we don't like acting together. Suppose we act well as husband and wife or lovers, the audience will not recognize us professionally but will think it is obvious. If we act badly, people will scrutinize and comment on why a husband and wife act like that. I think it's best to "avoid" it.

- When everything is complete and your children are successful, what do you wish for most at this age?

I just wish to be healthy. If people are happy and trust me and invite me to act in a movie, I will participate for fun, not hoping that through a role or a movie I can become "this person or that person".
