People have extra income during flood season thanks to golden apple snails

During the flood season in the Dong Thap Muoi region of Tay Ninh province, the water level is still lower than the average of many years, there is not much seafood to catch, but people can still increase their income by catching golden apple snails to sell to traders.

People sell snails to traders, increasing income during flood season

Low water levels are favorable for golden apple snails to thrive because they are not washed away by water. Snails cling to tree branches and blades of grass and then grow and reproduce very quickly. Taking advantage of his free time, Mr. Bui Cong Hau (residing in Tuyen Binh commune) goes to the fields to catch snails to sell. Every afternoon, he rows a boat to collect snails until almost dawn. The price of snails sold to traders is 2,000 VND/kg (snails with shells), excluding the cost of gasoline and oil, Mr. Hau has an income of 400,000-500,000 VND per night.

According to Mr. Phan Van Tuan (residing in Tan Hung commune), this year, the amount of snails is more than previous years, the selling price is also higher. On average, each night, his family can earn from 400,000-500,000 VND, even on "lucky" nights, earning 700,000-800,000 VND.

The income from catching golden apple snails during the flood season is quite stable, so it has attracted many people to participate, in communes such as Vinh Chau, Tuyen Binh, Vinh Hung, Tan Hung. People said that they often go catching snails at night because the weather is cool, the snails float to the surface of the water and are easy to catch.

Mr. Vo Van Phat - a golden apple snail buyer, said that every year when the flood season comes (from August to November of the lunar calendar), he starts buying snails from people. Golden apple snails are caught by households and collected at a common gathering point. After being processed and classified, the snails are transported to some central provinces to sell to shrimp and fish farming households. On average, he buys about 30-60 tons of snails (with shells) every day, at a price of 2,000-2,500 VND/kg (depending on the time).

Purchasing golden apple snails during the flood season not only creates additional income for people but also creates conditions for dozens of workers to have additional income (from 300,000-500,000 VND per day) from carrying snails for hire.

During the flood season, people catch golden apple snails to sell, contributing to solving employment for idle workers in the locality, increasing income. This work is also important in contributing to reducing the number of golden apple snails that harm crops./.
