Thai people commemorate Queen Mother Sirikit

On October 26, Thai officials and people came to pay their respects before the portrait of Queen Mother Sirikit at the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Queen Mother Sirikit passed away on October 24 at the age of 93.

During these days, to commemorate Queen Mother Sirikit, many Thai people dressed in black and gathered at the Grand Palace and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok. In other localities, ceremonies were also held to pay respect and commemorate Queen Mother Sirikit.

Many leaders and diplomatic missions of countries in Thailand also sent condolences to the Royal Family, Government and people of Thailand, and honored the contributions of Queen Mother Sirikit.

According to the announcement of the Thai Royal Family, Queen Mother Sirikit has been continuously monitored and treated at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital since September 2019. Despite the dedicated care of the medical team, Queen Mother Sirikit passed away at 9:21 p.m. on October 24.

Immediately after the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) ordered a state funeral with the highest level of royal honors. Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's body will be laid to rest at Dusit Maha Prasat Palace in the Grand Palace.

On October 25, Thai Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul chaired a special cabinet meeting to plan a state funeral for Queen Mother Sirikit according to royal protocol.

According to the Thai Prime Minister's Office, the Government has instructed agencies, state-owned enterprises and educational institutions to fly flags at half-mast for 30 days, starting from October 25. Also from this day, civil servants, employees of state-owned enterprises and government officials will mourn for one year. People are allowed to pay their respects to the portrait of Queen Mother Sirikit at the Grand Palace from 8am to 12pm today (October 26).

A funeral committee was established, headed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, with subcommittees in charge of managing the state funeral, ensuring security, public relations, etc. Activities to commemorate and pay tribute to the contributions of Queen Mother Sirikit will also be held.

In a televised address, on behalf of the Thai Government and people, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Queen Mother Sirikit.

According to Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, under the reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), Queen Sirikit made many contributions to the country and the Thai people, notably promoting traditional crafts, protecting the environment and launching public health initiatives.

Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that Queen Mother Sirikit not only receives the respect of the Thai people but is also highly appreciated by the international community for her contributions to peace and development.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul affirmed that the Thai Government will make every effort to ensure the organization of a national funeral and related ceremonies, and called on people to express their condolences and pay tribute to Queen Mother Sirikit.

Regarding the information about banning the private sector from organizing entertainment activities within 30 days, Ms. Traisuree Taisaranakul, Secretary General of the Prime Minister of Thailand, said that this is not correct.

Ms. Traisuree Taisaranakul stated that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul only asked for cooperation from the public and the private sector in considering and adjusting entertainment activities to suit the funeral atmosphere.

Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, Spokesperson of the Thai Prime Minister's Office, said that the Government wants businesses to review and adjust their activities in accordance with tradition and culture, but also not affect the economy.
