The patient is Ms. PTL (41 years old, living in Hanoi ), who came to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for help with severe pain around the wound on her face. Taking a medical history, about 4 years ago, Ms. L. went to a spa to inject an unknown type of filler into her cheekbones and chin on both sides.

About 2 months after being admitted to the hospital, a hole appeared on the woman's left cheek, with pus leaking out of the skin. The patient returned to the spa where she had been injected with filler and underwent minor surgery to widen the hole to clean out the pus and suture it.

However, the patient did not recover and had severe pain around the wound. At Trung Vuong Hospital, the Burn and Plastic Surgery Department performed surgery to treat the woman's complications.

During the surgery, the doctors discovered many pus pockets on the patient's face and around the old surgical incision, so they drained the pus, cleaned it, and treated the symptoms. Currently, Ms. L's health is gradually stabilizing.

Reporting at a recent conference on aesthetics organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health , Master, Specialist Doctor 2 Dinh Phuong Dong, in charge of the Burn - Cosmetic Surgery Department, Trung Vuong Hospital, said that patient safety is the top priority in treatment in general and cosmetic surgery in particular.

Doctors warn that there are currently illegal cosmetic facilities that employ "amateur doctors", causing people to lose money and suffer disabilities. Many cases of cosmetic procedures using improper fillers have resulted in serious complications such as necrosis, abscesses, infections, and even blindness.

It is necessary to distinguish between medical incidents and professional violations.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, there are many causes leading to medical incidents in the field of aesthetics, including improper practice registration, performing techniques beyond the scope of expertise, non-compliance with procedures and shortcomings in infection control.

To improve safety in cosmetic surgery, it is necessary to implement many important solutions synchronously, such as complying with pre-operative assessment procedures, enhancing intra- and post-operative monitoring, and implementing Care Pathway.

In addition, improving the capacity of medical staff through continuous professional training and emergency treatment training also plays a key role.

Another important issue is to distinguish clearly between medical errors and professional misconduct.

Specifically, medical incidents can occur even when doctors follow the correct procedures. In this case, what needs to be done is transparency, reporting, learning from experience, improvement and prevention.

Meanwhile, practicing without a license, exceeding the scope of expertise, false advertising, lacking emergency conditions, infection control, not following technical procedures... leading to patient safety are violations of practice.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health requires medical examination and treatment facilities that provide aesthetic technical services to strictly comply with legal regulations; meet professional, personnel and equipment requirements; and strictly implement issued recommendations and procedures.
