In Asia, Vietnam's English ranks 7th out of 23 countries and territories.

Accordingly, Vietnam scored 505/800 points, ranking 58th out of 113 countries and territories. Compared to 2021 when Vietnam ranked 66/112 and 2022 when it ranked 60/111, after 2 years, the English proficiency of Vietnamese people has increased by 8 places, but still continues to be in the group of 33 countries and territories with average English proficiency in the world.

Among the 12 cities evaluated, Hanoi has the highest English proficiency with 538 points, Ho Chi Minh City is second with 519 points. Hai Phong and Nha Trang both achieved 516 points. In terms of age, the 26-30 age group uses English best in the country, in terms of gender, the English proficiency index of Vietnamese men is 513, while that of women is 498.

The Netherlands holds the number 1 position in the world with 647 points. Singapore, Austria, Denmark, and Norway are ranked 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, respectively. According to this ranking, Europe is still the continent with the highest English proficiency in the world, with only 2/34 countries and territories in the group with low English proficiency.

In Asia, Vietnam ranked 7th out of 23 countries and territories. With 631 points, Singapore continues to lead Asia and ranks 2nd in the world. This is also the only country in Asia with a very high English proficiency index. At the high level are the Philippines, Malaysia and Hong Kong (China).

In Southeast Asia, Indonesia (473), Myanmar (450) are classified as low proficiency while Cambodia (421) and Thailand (416) are in the very low proficiency level.

China and Japan continue to have low English proficiency scores with 464 and 457 points, respectively.

Thus, with 113 countries and territories ranked, Vietnamese people are more proficient in English than citizens of 54 countries and territories, including Japan, China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico, Myanmar, Cambodia, Turkey, Brazil, Algeria, Ivory Coast...

Vietnam is among the 33 countries and territories with average English proficiency in the world.

Young people's English proficiency is declining in some places.

According to EF Education First's assessment, average English proficiency in South Asia and Southeast Asia decreased slightly, due to a gradual decline in English proficiency in India and a plateau in Thailand.

Meanwhile, adult English proficiency has declined in East Asia over the past four years, and in Japan for a decade. The decline accelerated this year in both Japan and China.

The organisation also found that English proficiency among younger generations is declining in some places, with some large countries seeing declines in the youngest age group (18-20 years old). But in most places, young people’s English proficiency has stabilised, or if it has declined, it is due to disruptions to education systems during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The gender gap continues to widen. Over the past decade, men's English proficiency has improved globally, while women's has declined slightly, according to EF Education First.
