In 2009, Mr. Duong Van Ngo (born in 1930) was recognized by the Vietnam Book of Records Center as the longest-serving letter writer in Vietnam. In 2021, he retired from the Ho Chi Minh City Post Office due to old age and poor health.
At the age of 16, Mr. Duong Van Ngo started working at a post office in Thi Nghe. In 1948, he officially worked as a letter sorter at the Saigon Post Office. Since 1990 (after retiring), Mr. Ngo has been writing letters at the request of the sender for more than 30 years.
Depending on the wishes of the customer, he can write in Vietnamese, English, French, etc. Whether writing letters or translating for hire, he always tries to reproduce in the best way according to the request of the person asking him to write, from the best wishes to the most sincere confidences.
Mr. Duong Van Ngo (born in 1930), originally from Chaozhou (China) but born and raised in Vietnam. In 1942, he was one of the poor students who was lucky enough to be admitted to Lycée Petrus Ky (now Le Hong Phong school).
At the Ho Chi Minh City post office, there were 4 or 5 people who wrote for hire with him, but now some have passed away, some have retired due to health reasons, so only he is left doing this job.
The letters you write are always loved for their emotion.
Many people believe that Mr. Ngo's letters are not just stories but also lines of feelings, bringing rich emotions to readers. Thousands of love letters have been written by him and delivered to recipients in the US, UK, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Thailand...
Knowing that Mr. Ngo was the only person writing letters for hire in Saigon, a German reporter named Fiona Ehlers, when coming to Vietnam, gave Mr. Ngo the title of "Connecting the world with letters".
Mr. Duong Van Ngo will be buried at Binh Duong flower garden cemetery on the morning of August 5.
