Commenting on the rainfall in February, Mr. Le Dinh Quyet - Head of Forecasting Department - Southern Hydrometeorological Station, said that in the past 20 years, since 2005, there have been 12 years with rain in February. Of which, the total rainfall in February 2006 was the highest with 72.7mm (the day with the highest rainfall was February 10, 2006 with 66.1mm), followed by 2012, the total rainfall in February was 68.7mm (February 17, 2012 had the highest total rainfall of 46.7mm).
Mr. Quyet said that the rainfall measured on February 12 in Ho Chi Minh City reached 30-50mm and counting the rainfall up to this morning (February 13), this February in Ho Chi Minh City recorded the highest rainfall in the past 20 years with an average of about 120.7mm. Not to mention, the remaining days of February this year, Ho Chi Minh City is likely to continue to experience unseasonal rain.
“The rain in the early morning of February 13 was the heaviest in February. The total rainfall at Nha Be station was 124.4 mm. A rain of over 100 mm in February has never happened in the past 20 years,” Mr. Quyet informed.
Regarding the cause of the rain, Mr. Quyet also said that the cause of the rain is not unusual. Currently, the tropical low pressure area is operating in the middle of the East Sea, the low pressure trough connects with the tropical low pressure area, converging wind and humidity, creating unseasonal rain in Ho Chi Minh City and the provinces and cities of the South.
It is forecasted that today, February 13, Ho Chi Minh City will continue to have showers and thunderstorms in some places due to the combined impact of the southern edge of the cold air mass and the low pressure trough with the tropical low pressure area over the East Sea. On February 14, the tropical low pressure weakened, the rain decreased, and there was only localized rain. From February 17-20, the area will continue to have rain in some places due to the movement of high-altitude easterly winds (causing rain).
