In the 5,000m race, the two Vietnamese athletes dominated the competition from the start, leaving their rivals far behind. For most of the race, Le Thi Tuyet was in the lead. But in the final 600m, Nguyen Thi Oanh surged ahead and crossed the finish line first.
Thus, Nguyen Thi Oanh has won the SEA Games 5,000m gold medal for the fifth consecutive time.
To date, Nguyen Thi Oanh has participated in the SEA Games 5 times, winning a total of 13 gold medals in athletics and equaling the record of legendary runner Nguyen Thi Huyen.
Based on her current performance, Nguyen Thi Oanh is expected to win two more gold medals at the SEA Games 33 in the 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase events.
In the last three Southeast Asian Games, the runner born in 1995 swept all the gold medals in the 1,500m, 5,000m, and 3,000m steeplechase events. But this time, she did not participate in the 1,500m race.
Also on December 13th, the Vietnamese sports delegation competed in the women's 200m event. As a result, Le Thi Cam Tu performed well and won the Silver Medal.
