In this segment, Quang Thuấn - the younger brother of "little mermaid" Nguyễn Thị Ánh Viên - performed excellently, leading for most of the race, surpassing even his senior Trần Hưng Nguyên to finish with a time of 4:19.98 seconds.
Although the 19-year-old swimmer's performance hasn't yet broken Hung Nguyen's record at the SEA Games 31 (4:18.10 seconds), it shows his remarkable progress.
This is Quang Thuan's third SEA Games in his career. At the 31st SEA Games, at the age of 16, Quang Thuan made a strong impression with a silver medal in the men's 400m individual medley, finishing in 4:22.26 seconds, only behind his senior teammate Tran Hung Nguyen.
At the 32nd SEA Games, Quang Thuan continued to demonstrate his progress by winning a Silver Medal in this event, but with an improved time of 4:21.03 seconds. At the Hangzhou Asian Games, he raised his time to 4:19.52 seconds, reaching the final of this event and finishing 7th.
Returning to the final of the men's 400m individual medley at the 33rd SEA Games, Tran Hung Nguyen – who had dominated this event in the previous SEA Games – had to settle for the Silver Medal with a time of 4:25.45 seconds. Although unable to defend his title, Hung Nguyen still showed his courage and fierce competitive spirit, contributing to an emotional race for the fans.
