Buffet restaurant demands $6,500 compensation for customer taking leftover food home

VnExpressVnExpress19/05/2023

A restaurant in Guizhou province in China is demanding 6,500 yuan in compensation from a customer who intentionally ordered extra food from the buffet to take home.

The woman, surnamed Wen, recently had to pay compensation to a buffet restaurant in Guizhou Province, China, after being sued, SCMP reported on May 18.

The buffet restaurant’s manager, surnamed Wu, said Wen dined there five times in two weeks in August 2022, choosing the 218 yuan (over $31) buffet package, but each time ordered 10,000 yuan (1,500 USD) worth of food, 10 times more than the average person could eat. Wen also only ordered expensive dishes such as shrimp, salmon and foie gras.

The restaurant owner initially thought Wen wanted to order a lot of dishes to imitate the "foodies" on social media, but was extremely shocked when he watched the surveillance camera and discovered that after each meal, Wen used a pre-prepared plastic bag, hid it under the table, to secretly take the leftover food home.

When questioned, Wen explained that she accidentally ordered more food than she could eat and decided to take the leftovers home to "avoid waste".

The buffet restaurant owner has asked Wen to pay 45,000 yuan ($6,500) in compensation for five occasions when she took home leftovers. The restaurant said it had posted a sign stating that customers must pay for each dish according to the menu price if they leave more than 100 grams of leftovers or want to buy takeout.

Wen initially refused to pay the restaurant’s compensation claim. After being sued, she was forced to pay the amount and an additional 8,000 yuan (more than $1,100) in legal fees.

The incident caused a stir on Chinese social media, with many people calling the girl "greedy" and applauding the restaurant's handling of the situation.

"This is not going to eat buffet but to stock up her refrigerator," one account commented.

"She may have had to pay more than the food she took home, but that's the price you pay for stealing," another social media user wrote.

Stories of customers eating more than usual at Chinese buffet restaurants are not uncommon. Earlier this month, seven diners in Shandong province caused controversy after they ate 300 crabs, 80 cups of dessert, 50 boxes of durian, and a lot of seafood in just four and a half hours, paying only 160 yuan ($23). One of the diners explained that they did not overeat, but were "really hungry."
