How should carriers deploy 5G?

VietNamNetVietNamNet09/05/2024

Carriers believe that large industrial parks will be the places eagerly awaiting 5G to serve smart factories.
Editorial: Up to now, the Ministry of Information and Communications has granted frequency licenses to two network operators, Viettel and VNPT, to deploy 5G networks. This is an important event to promote the development of digital infrastructure for Vietnam, serving the needs of ultra-wideband in the future. In the immediate future, network operators still need to invest in improving the quality of 4G networks, because this is still their main need and source of revenue. VietNamNet would like to send readers a series of articles on the perspective of 4G technology and 5G deployment in Vietnam in the coming time.
Smart factory model with 5G connection is on the rise. According to Vincent Hung, Director of Business Development of SMART Modular Technologies, there is a wave of Chinese enterprises moving their factories to Vietnam and they need solutions for smart factories with 5G connection. Therefore, Smart Modular Technologies wants to catch up with this wave by establishing partners to provide solutions for smart factories. Previously, Yen Nee Goh, Country Director of Intel Vietnam and Indonesia, said that smart factory models will develop strongly in the next 5 years, in which Vietnam is one of the key markets in the region. It is forecasted that the global smart manufacturing industry will reach 384.8 billion USD in 2025, nearly double the 214 billion USD in 2020. The Asia Pacific region will have the highest annual compound growth rate in the world in this field, with ASEAN and Vietnam being one of the key markets.

Large industrial parks will be the ones eagerly waiting for 5G to serve smart factories.

Sharing about the business model that 5G brings when talking to network operators, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung cited the example of Chinese network operators liberating the labor of millions of girls who still use magnifying glasses to examine printed circuit boards every day to detect errors. They use cameras with 5G SIMs and take photos of standard circuit boards to send to the data center, then use AI to compare and detect defective circuit boards. It is a very simple digital application, very easy to do but the value it brings is huge and also helps the country increase labor productivity. The Minister emphasized that without 5G, there would be no 10% growth, but 10% growth is not just 5G but a 5G ecosystem. So network operators should go into industries and fields to create digital applications, help digital transformation, and develop the digital economy for industries and fields. This is also the process of industrialization and modernization of the country. Network operators will provide 5G networks exclusively for industrial parks. Sharing with VietNamNet , major network operators said that the business model of providing 5G services effectively to individual customers is not really clear, but the need for 5G networks exclusively for industrial parks to serve smart factories is necessary. From Viettel 's perspective, Director of Mobile Center - Viettel Telecom Nguyen Van Son said that people's demand for 5G is high but the number of 5G-supported devices is still low, only about 17-20%. Given this situation, Viettel will choose to prioritize deploying 5G in areas with high demand, with a large proportion of 5G-supported phones. In addition, in industrial parks, export processing zones, innovation centers... Sharing more about the challenges when deploying 5G, Viettel representative said that there are not many content services on 5G, only 4K, 8K videos, live streaming, and few AR, VR services... Therefore, network operators must be the pioneers in deploying content development for 5G. Sharing this view, Deputy Head of Technology Department of VNPT Group Nguyen Quoc Khanh said that currently about 18% of VNPT users' devices have 5G; And the rate of 5G devices will increase very quickly. “We envision 5G in Vietnam to be deployed in two phases,” said Rita Mokbel, Director of Ericsson Vietnam. “Initially, the technology will be deployed in major cities with high mobile subscriber density, as well as in industrial parks to enable businesses to benefit from private 5G networks to increase efficiency and automation. 5G will then be rolled out nationwide, in line with the goals of both the Government and network operators.” Some localities have expressed their desire to deploy private 5G networks for industrial parks. At a recent working session with the Ministry of Information and Communications, the leaders of Binh Duong province expressed their desire to soon deploy a private 5G network for Becamex’s industrial parks to serve businesses implementing smart factory models. In July 2023, Hai Phong became the first city to have a smart factory that successfully applied Viettel 5G Private Mobile Network to operate the Pegatron Group factory. This factory is automated based on the connection of 5G mobile service with the advantages of high speed, extremely low latency, wide bandwidth and support for a large number of connections. Before Viettel successfully tested 5G Private Mobile Network technology at Pegatron's factory, in 2022, Tan Vu and Dinh Vu ports also deployed 5G technology for port operations to optimize operations.

Hai Phong is the first city to have a smart factory successfully applying Viettel 5G Private Mobile Network to operate the Pegatron Group factory.

Mr. Hoang Minh Cuong, Vice Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee, assessed that for Hai Phong, 5G services for industry are of vital importance. Digital infrastructure is one of the points that need to be invested in first to create advantages to attract investment. The 5G Private Mobile Network model will be encouraged by Hai Phong authorities to expand to many factories, industrial parks, and ports to optimize operations and improve efficiency.
