The 21km distance has the largest number of athletes participating, up to nearly 3,500 people and Hoang Nguyen Thanh will compete in the event considered the most attractive of the tournament. The running route starts from the Sala area, along Nguyen Co Thach, Hoang The Thien, Tran Bach Dang streets then crosses Ba Son bridge, considered a highlight of Ho Chi Minh City's architecture.

After crossing Ba Son Bridge, runners returned to Thu Thiem via Vong Cung Boulevard, Thu Thiem Tunnel, Mai Chi Tho Street, Kim Cuong Island... The route ran through many open areas, along the river with fresh air and encompassed the new center of Ho Chi Minh City.

SEA Games 31 champion Hoang Nguyen Thanh won the men's 21 km race.

After more than an hour of exciting competition, SEA Games 31 champion Hoang Nguyen Thanh finished first in the men's 21 km event with a time of 1 hour 12 minutes 40 seconds. In the women's event, athlete Hoang Thi Ngoc Hoa also finished first in the women's 21 km event with a time of 1 hour 22 minutes 26 seconds.
