Musician Ton That Lap - author of the song 'Get up and go' passed away

Information from the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association on July 26 said that musician Ton That Lap - author of the songs "Get up and go", "Sing for my people"... passed away on the morning of July 26 in Ho Chi Minh City, at the age of 81.

Musician Ton That Lap was born on February 25, 1942 in Hue. He also has the pen names Tran Nhat Nam and Le Nguyen. He has held many important positions such as: Deputy Secretary General of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association, term III and VI; Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association, term V; Chairman of the Art Council of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association, term VI; Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Musicians Association, term III, IV, V, VI and VII; Deputy Secretary General of term VI, Vice President of term VII. He was also Editor-in-Chief of the Vietnam Musicians Association's Vietnam Music Magazine.

In the 60s of the 20th century, musician Ton That Lap was active in the music movement “Sing for my compatriots”, and was the most prominent figure in the urban struggle movement of the Southern youth before 1975. At that time, his songs such as “Sing for my people”, “Going to the street”, and the choir “Rice blooms all over the plains”... were sung loudly on the streets of the struggle of students in the Southern cities.

After that, he was sent to study composition at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music). After graduating, he worked in the cultural sector in the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam. After the country was liberated, he worked at the Department of Culture and Information of Ho Chi Minh City. During this time, he continued to release many songs that were widely loved by the masses such as "Spring Love Song", "Youth Love Song", "Tri An Echo of Spring", "Whispering Rain", "Rock-Paper-Scissors", "Cute Girl", "Forever Love"...

Musician Ton That Lap has published collections such as “Pho Ca”, “Hat Cho Dan Toi Nghe”, “Hat Loi Moc Bao”, “Tinh Ca Mua Xuan”, “Tuyen Tap Ton That Lap” and albums “Nu Hon”, “Tinh Ca Mua Xuan”. In addition, he has written many dance songs, film music…. He was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts, Phase II (2007).

The Ho Chi Minh City Music Association said that the funeral for musician Ton That Lap will begin at 9:00 a.m. on July 28 at the Southern National Funeral Home (5 Pham Ngu Lao, Ward 3, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City). The memorial service will take place at 6:00 a.m. on July 30, 2023.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports will organize the program "Ton That Lap - Forever Echoing Songs" on the evening of August 5 at the City Theater (No. 7 Lam Son Square, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) to commemorate him.
